UWHARRIE POINT, N.C. – The Wake Forest men's golf team remained in second place at the 2016 ACC Championship during second round play Saturday at the Old North State Club. Davis Womble took over the individual lead as the Demon Deacons shot even par on the day to remain 11-under as a team.
Wake Forest trails second-round leader Clemson (19-under) by eight shots and are six shots ahead of third place Florida State (5-under).
"I thought we played well today, but just didn't get a lot out of it scoring wise," said head coach Jerry Haas. "We are still within striking range. We just need to get off to a good start, play a good front side and get in the mix. There is a lot that can happen over these last three holes, both good and bad. If we can put ourselves in position where if we play those final holes under, we might catch Clemson. If Florida State has a hot day, they are going to be in it as well. It looks like a three-horse race and hopefully the Deacs can come out on top."
Womble shot a second-round 69, tied for low round of the day, to take the individual lead heading into the final day. He capped the round with a birdie on 18, his sixth birdie of the day.
"Yesterday, I made a lot of putts and scored a lot better than I played, but today I played really, really well," said Womble. "I hit it solid all day and gave myself a lot of chances. Honestly, I didn't have the putts drop today or else I could have shot a couple lower. I am excited where I am at and hopefully I can play well tomorrow and see what happens."
Paul McBride, the first round leader, shot a second round 75 and is T-6th at 3-under for the tournament. Kyle Sterbinsky shot a 2-under 70 on Saturday to move under par for the tournament, currently T-16th at 1-under. Will Zalatoris is T-35th at 4-over after a second round 78 and Cameron Young is T-55th at 13-over after a round of 74.
The tournament concludes Sunday at the Old North State Club. There will be live coverage on ESPN3 beginning at 1 p.m.
