DAVIDSON, N.C. -- Wake Forest won a back-and-forth affair over Davidson, 7-6, with two runs in the ninth inning at Wilson Field on Tuesday night.
After the Wildcats (16-13) pulled ahead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth, the Demon Deacons (19-12) answered with the tying and winning runs in the ninth.
Will Craig finished the day 3-for-4 with a double, sacrifice fly and five RBIs, matching his career-high, and also picked up the win on the mound.
Stuart Fairchild (2-for-4, 2 runs) led off the ninth with a line-drive triple into the right-field corner, and scored when Craig flied out to the wall to tie the game.
Gavin Sheets (2-for-4, walk, RBI) restarted the rally with a single up the middle and advanced to second on a groundout. Then, Joey Rodriguez knocked a line drive through the right side to bring home Sheets for what proved to be the game-winning run.
"We had five two-out RBIs tonight, and when you have five two-out RBIs, you're going to win a lot of games," head coach Tom Walter said. "This is a good team and the guys believe in themselves. This should help us come out this weekend and play well."
Davidson scored a pair of runs in the fourth and sixth innings to turn a 3-0 deficit into a 4-3 lead. Wake Forest reclaimed the lead in the seventh when Kevin Conway (2-for-3, 2 walks, 2 runs) singled and Nate Mondou walked, then Craig hit a double down the right-field line to bring them both home to claim a 5-4 advantage.
The Wildcats took the lead in the eighth. After a leadoff walk and sacrifice bunt, Davidson used an infield single, RBI groundout, wild pitch and infield single to bring home a pair before the Deacs' ninth-inning comeback.
Donnie Sellers earned his fifth save of the season with a 1-2-3 ninth inning, striking out a batter.
Aaron Fossas started and tossed 2.0 hitless innings, striking out three. Chris Farish also fanned a pair in a scoreless inning in relief.
Wake Forest is back in action this weekend, traveling to NC State for games on Friday, Saturday and Monday. Friday's game airs live on ESPN3, while Monday's will be broadcast nationally on ESPNU.
