The Match-Up
Wake Forest wraps up its eight-game road swing with an ACC series at NC State on Friday, Saturday and Monday. Friday's game will be broadcast on ESPN3, while the 7 p.m. Monday contest will air live on ESPNU.
Wake Forest Storylines
Wake Forest has won seven of its past 10 contests, including a 7-6 victory at Davidson most recently.
The back-and-forth affair featured four lead changes, with the Demon Deacons taking the lead for good in the top of the ninth with a Will Craig sacrifice fly and Joey Rodriguez RBI single. Donnie Sellers tossed a perfect ninth inning to record his fifth save.
Craig leads the nation in slugging percentage (.950), also ranking atop the ACC in RBIs (41) and batting average (.475).
Craig has returned to the starting lineup for the past eight games after he tweaked his oblique on March 11. Wake Forest is 17-7 overall and 5-3 in ACC play with Craig, compared to 2-5 overall and 1-4 in ACC action without him.
Stuart Fairchild and Jonathan Pryor also have on-base percentages over .400. Fairchild is hitting .300 with a .432 OBP, along with 10 doubles, two homers and 20 RBIs. Pryor is hitting .287 with a .446 OBP.
The Opposition & Series History
Wake Forest's first known baseball game came against NC State on April 14, 1890, with Wake Forest claiming a 35-5 victory.
NC State has claimed 13 straight series against the Demon Deacons, with Wake Forest's last series win coming in 2002, a year in which the Deacons won 47 games.
The teams met annually from 1907 to 1955 on Easter Monday, formerly a public holiday in North Carolina, drawing crowds of up to 8,000. Before Wake Forest moved to Winston-Salem, the contests served as a de facto county championship; Wake Forest went 28-13-2.
The Wolfpack enter with a 20-9 overall mark and 5-5 ACC record, most recently taking two of three at top-25 foe Virginia, and claiming a pair of midweek wins over Charlotte.
As a team, the Wolfpack strike out more than a batter per inning with a team ERA below 3.00, while seven starters are hitting above .295.
On Deck
Wake Forest gears up for a home-and-home against UNCG, with games in Winston-Salem on Tuesday and Greensboro on Wednesday. The Spartans are currently a top-50 RPI team.
