TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Wake Forest men's and women's track and field teams completed the first day of competition at the ACC Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Mike Long Track in Tallahassee, Fla. on Friday. Three Demon Deacons came away with all-conference accolades.
The men's team sits in seventh place with five team points, while the women are in 10th after picking up 5.5 points.
Charlie Ionata gave the Deacs their highest finish of the day, using a 65.04m toss in the hammer throw to take fourth place. His throw was four inches shy of matching his own school record. The fourth-place showing gave the junior his third Second Team All-ACC honor in as many years.
Alexander Krall left himself in contention for an all-league plaudit, putting up 3,572 points in the first five of 10 events in the men's decathlon to put himself in fifth.
Just as the men did, the Demon Deacon women provided an all-conference finish in the hammer throw. Alva Hicks' 57.20m throw slotted her in the top six in the event. The freshman broke her own school record by 2.54m (8' 4") with the effort.
Also with an All-ACC effort was Kathleen Adair, who tied for sixth in the women's pole vault with a height of 3.91m. The honor was the first of its kind for the senior, who achieved Honorable Mention All-American status last season.
Kathryn Lazarchick was also solid for the women, qualifying for Sunday's 1,500m final with a prelim time of 4:27.61 on Friday.
The Deacs continue action in Tallahassee on Saturday and Sunday. Competition will air on ESPN3 starting at 6 p.m. on both days.
