TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Wake Forest men's and women's track and field teams wrapped up competition at the ACC Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Mike Long Track in Tallahassee, Fla. on Sunday.
Both teams finished in 12th place, but had a pair of all-conference performances on the final day. A total of 10 Demon Deacons earned All-ACC honors at the meet, including four first-team performers and two champions in Robert Heppenstall and Jessie Merckle.
Heppenstall's 1:49.27 time in the 800m on Sunday made him the first ACC outdoor champion on the men's side for the Deacs since 2010. He became the first Deacon since Warren Sherman in 1995 to win in the 800m at the outdoor conference meet. Heppenstall also earned gold in the 800m at the ACC Indoors before going on to achieve All-American status.
Also coming up big on the men's side was Max Adams, who grabbed the first all-league award of his career with a personal record discus throw of 54.92m that slotted him sixth.
The Wake Forest women also saw success in the discus, as Casidy Callahan used a toss of 47.82m to make First Team All-ACC with a third-place showing. Alva Hicks, who got an All-ACC nod on Friday in the hammer throw, came in eighth after entering the event ranked 12th. Callahan entered Sunday ranked No. 8.
Rounding out the Deacs' all-conference plaudits was Alexandria Florent, who tied for fourth in the women's high jump with a mark of 1.75m.
Wake Forest will resume action with round one of the NCAA Championships, which will take place in Jacksonville, Fla. from May 26-28.
