WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Wake Forest fell behind early and was unable to come back due to an impressive start from Louisville starter Drew Harrington in a 9-2 loss at David F. Couch Ballpark on Friday afternoon.
Harrington took a no-hit bid into the fifth inning and finished with 7.0 scoreless innings, allowing just three hits and a walk as he improved to 11-1 for the Cardinals (45-10, 21-8 ACC).
Wake Forest (32-22, 13-16 ACC) received a two-run homer from Gavin Sheets in the ninth, but it was too little, too late to erase the deficit.
The Demon Deacons can clinch a spot in next week's ACC Tournament tonight if two of the following occur: Georgia Tech to beat Boston College once more, NC State to beat North Carolina once more, Clemson to beat Notre Dame once more.
Otherwise, Wake Forest can clinch with a win, or any of the above situations occurring, tomorrow. Pittsburgh beating Duke each of the next two days would also aid the Demon Deacons.
Louisville totaled 15 hits, including five doubles, two home runs and a triple. After a Brendan McKay RBI single in the first, Corey Ray hit a two-run longball in the fourth to make the lead 3-0. Will Smith chipped in a two-run homer in the fifth, plus an unearned run made the margin 6-0.
Rayne Supple was strong in relief for the Demon Deacons, tossing 2.0 hitless frames, while Griffin Roberts added a scoreless inning of his own.
No Deacon recorded more than one hit in the game, and Wake Forest's only extra-base hit was the ninth-inning blast from Sheets.
The teams wrap up the three-game series on Saturday afternoon, with first pitch set for 1 p.m., and Wake Forest will honor its seven seniors prior to the game.
