EUGENE, Ore. – The Wake Forest men's golf team posted its second consecutive 9-over round of 289 during the second day of play at the NCAA Championship at the Eugene Country Club. The Demon Deacons are tied for 20th place at 18-over through 36 holes of the tournament.
Wake Forest is tied with Oklahoma at 18-over and will enter the third round three strokes out of 15th place, the cut-line for the final round of stroke play.
"We need to rally the troops and have a good round tomorrow," said head coach Jerry Haas. "We will be in the afternoon wave, so the greens will be a little firmer and trickier. Out here, one good round can really move you up, so that is what we will look to have tomorrow. The goal tomorrow is to get into the top 15, so we can play Monday for a chance to make match play."
Wake Forest was led Saturday by senior Davis Womble, who fired a 3-under 67 with six birdies and three bogeys on his card. Individually, he is tied for 15th place at even par through two rounds.
Will Zalatoris had a 3-over round of 73 to fall to 2-over for the tournament. Kyle Sterbinsky also had a round of 73 and is at 3-over overall.
Paul McBride and Cameron Young each shot a 6-over round of 76 and both players are at 13-over for the tournament.
Round three of the NCAA Championship will be Sunday at the Eugene Country Club. The Deacs will play in the afternoon, beginning at noon PT (3 p.m. ET). The field of 30 teams will be trimmed to 15 teams after Sunday's play. Following Monday's fourth round, the top eight teams will compete in match play on Tuesday and Wednesday to determine the national champion.
