EUGENE, Ore. – Wake Forest women's track and field senior Jessie Merckle finished in 10th place in the women's javelin at the NCAA Outdoor Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. on Thursday. The Hickory, Pa. native's 50.82m throw made her a Second Team All-American.
The All-America nod was the third of Merckle's career. She was a first-teamer last season after making the second team in 2014.
Following a foul on her first attempt, Merckle jumped into the top nine with a 50.82m mark in her second try. She dropped to 10th after a 53.84m effort by Audrey Malone of Texas A&M and was unable to move back into finals territory, finishing with a throw of 48.24m.
Kelly Yanucil of Mount St. Mary's grabbed the last spot in the finals with a ninth-place top distance of 51.07m. Texas A&M's Maggie Malone went on to win the national title with a throw of 62.19m, a collegiate record.
Merckle became the program's fourth three-time All-American, joining Annie Bersagel (10,000m), Nikeya Green (800m) and Catrina Bindel (heptathlon). Bersagel was Wake Forest's last student-athlete to accomplish the feat, obtaining All-America honors in 2003, 2004 and 2005.
A three-time ACC champion, Merckle placed 12th at Nationals in 2014 before placing seventh last season. She leaves Wake Forest with the school record in the women's javelin after breaking her own program-best mark with a 56.91m toss in April at the High Point VertKlasse Meeting.
Wrapping up NCAA Outdoor Championships action for the Demon Deacons will be men's freshman Robert Heppenstall, who is slated to compete in the men's 800m final Friday at 9:47 p.m. on ESPN.
