WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The Wake Forest men's basketball team fell to No. 4 Duke, 84-70, in the second matchup of the season between the teams Tuesday night at the LJVM Coliseum.
Tuesday's game marked the first time since 1990-91 that the Demon Deacons (8-12, 1-7 ACC) have played two regular season games against an opponent in a 10-day span, as the Deacs and Blue Devils (18-2, 6-2 ACC) met at Cameron Indoor Stadium on Jan. 13. The last time this happened was against Virginia on Feb. 2 and Feb. 10, 1991.
Doral Moore recorded his sixth double-double of the season and third in ACC play with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Moore went 9-for-9 from the field, the second-highest single game field goal percentage in program history. He was just one field goal away from matching Kyle Visser's 10-for-10 performance against JMU on Nov. 11, 2006.
It was the second time this season Moore has been perfect from the field on at least five field goal attempts as he went 6-for-6 in the 81-75 victory over UNCG.
Brandon Childress recorded a career-high 18 points in his second consecutive double-figure game. He replaces the 17 points he scored against Virginia Tech earlier this season. Childress also matched a career high with five rebounds.
Chaundee Brown finished with 16 points to go along with a career-high five assists while Bryant Crawford also finished in double-digits with 10 points.
After trading baskets to open scoring, the Blue Devils used a 6-0 run to take an early lead over the Deacons. Wake Forest trimmed the lead to just one on two occasions before a jumper from Brown tied the game 13-all with 13 minutes left in the half. However, Duke managed another 6-0 run to build up a nine-point lead and force the Deacs into a timeout. The Blue Devils extended that run to 9-0, taking a 12-point lead with just over six minutes to go. Wake Forest managed to cut the lead to eight, but a scoring drought allowed the Blue Devils to use an 8-0 run and gain their largest lead of the half at 17 with two minutes to play. Despite the Deacs closing the first half on a 6-0 run, Duke took a 41-30 lead into halftime.
Moore led the Deacons in the first half with 14 points on 7-for-7 shooting to go along with seven rebounds.
Both teams opened scoring in the second half at the free throw line, combining to go 4-for-6 before Duke's Wendell Carter Jr. scored on a jumper. Duke went on an early 9-0 run to take its largest lead of the game at 51-31 with under 17 minutes to go. However, the Deacons kept fighting and used a 10-0 run to cut the Devils' lead down to nine points with over 11 minutes to play. The momentum continued to shift in the Deacons' favor as Childress knocked down a three and Brown earned a layup after a goaltending call to cut the lead to eight. However, the Blue Devils countered with a 6-0 run of their own to regain a 14-point lead. The lead was too much to overcome as the Deacons fell, 84-70.
Up next, Wake Forest hits the road to visit Louisville on Saturday, Jan. 27. Tip is set for 8 p.m. on ACC Network affiliates.
