WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Wake Forest women's basketball team overcame a slow start offensively to defeat Richmond, 62-48, and improve to 3-0 on the season Sunday (Nov. 11) afternoon at the LJVM Coliseum.
After shooting 14.3 percent in the opening quarter, the Demon Deacons (3-0) shot 48.7 percent over the remaining three frames while limiting the Spiders (0-3) to just 30.8 percent shooting for the game.
Ivana Raca scored a game-high 19 points, her third consecutive game in double figures, while Elisa Penna added 17 points, 14 of which came in the second quarter, to pace the Wake Forest attack. Ona Udoh nearly had a double-double, finishing with eight points and nine rebounds, and Maya Banks had another solid effort off the bench with five points and six rebounds.
The Deacs fell behind 13-9 after one quarter of play due to a cold start from the field. Wake Forest was 2-of-14 shooting over the first 10 minutes of play, including 0-of-6 from the thee-point line. Maya Banks and Gina Conti were both able to get shots to fall while the team went perfect from the free throw line in the opening quarter.
Richmond's lead quickly grew to eight at 17-9, forcing a Wake Forest timeout just over a minute into the second. Penna, however, single-handedly brought Wake Forest back, going on a personal 9-2 run over 1:53 to pull the Deacs within one. The senior hit a triple while converting a pair of three-point plays after going scoreless in the first.
Ellen Hahne then got into the action, scoring in the paint to give Wake Forest its first lead of the day at the 5:06 mark of the second quarter, forcing a Spider timeout. The Deacs maintained their momentum throughout the remainder of the quarter, outscoring Richmond 14-4 over the final five minutes to take an 11-point lead into the halftime break. Banks put an exclamation point on the period, collecting an offensive board and laying it in at the buzzer.
Richmond would trim the deficit to single digits midway through the third quarter, but a 7-0 Wake Forest run pushed the advantage back to double digits. The Deacs would maintain their double figure lead for the remainder of the game.
Wake Forest has a week off before returning to action. The Demon Deacons will hit the road for the first time this season to take VCU. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
