WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Alex Sharp recorded her first double-double of the season as the Wake Forest women's basketball held off a late St. John's rally for a 64-59 victory Sunday (Dec. 2) afternoon inside the LJVM Coliseum.
Sharp led all scorers with 17 points and added 10 rebounds for her ninth-career double-double. The junior was joined in double figures by Ona Udoh who contributed 14 points and eight rebounds. Maya Banks added a career-high nine points off the bench. Gina Conti nearly had her second-career game with 10 assists, finishing the afternoon with a season-high nine.
Sharp single-handedly outscored St. John's (5-2) in the opening period, dropping 13 points on a perfect 6-of-6 shooting from the field. The junior also dominated the glass with five boards in the opening frame. After jumping out to an early 15-6 lead, forcing a St. John's timeout, the Deacs (4-4) then closed the period on an 8-0 run to take a 23-12 lead into the second.
The Red Storm trimmed Wake Forest's lead down to five midway through the second quarter as the Deacs started the period 1-of-7 from the field. The Deacs regained their shooting form, however, ending the period 4-of-5 from the field to maintain their 11-point lead heading into the break. The Demon Deacon defense stood tall in the first half, limiting St. John's to just 26.7 percent shooting.
The two teams would trade baskets in an even third period before St. John's made a late push in the fourth. Seven consecutive points pulled the Red Storm within four of the Deacs with 20.2 remaining in the game before a block by Udoh stopped any further come back.
As a team, the Deacs shot 47.5 percent, the second-best shooting performance of the season. The Demon Deacons also dished out a season-best 19 assists and tied a season high with five blocks.
Wake Forest returns to action on Wednesday, December 5, making the quick trip south to face Charlotte. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
