Charlotte, N.C. – The Wake Forest women's basketball team (5-4) defeated the Charlotte 49ers (5-2), 69-43, Wednesday (Dec. 5) night inside Halton Arena. The win marks the Deacs' largest margin of victory (26) of the season.
Four players scored in double-figures for the Deacs, anchored by Elisa Penna with 16 points and seven rebounds. Ona Udoh (14 points, nine rebounds), Ivana Raca (13 points, six rebounds) and Alex Sharp (13 points, seven rebounds) all came close to recording double-doubles. Freshman Kaylen Dickson notched nine points in 19 minutes off the bench for Wake Forest.
Penna (8) and Udoh (6) combined for 14 of Wake Forest's 18 first quarter points. The two teams came out and were exchanging buckets early. Charlotte gave the first punch with a 5-0 run and found their range from beyond the arc. Udoh reeled in six rebounds to set the tone in the paint for the Deacs. Penna connected on back-to-back buckets to take the lead, 18-16, with a 7-0 run.
Carrying the momentum into the second, Wake Forest outscored Charlotte 20-9 and established multiple runs. They scored eight straight from the foul line and remained in attack mode at the rim. Despite 14 first-half points from Jade Phillips, the 49ers went scoreless for roughly four minutes of play and found themselves playing from behind. Udoh continued to impose her will at both ends, finishing with 10 points and seven boards to keep Wake Forest ahead 28-25 at the break.
Back-to-back threes by the 49ers cut the Deacs' lead to seven, but Wake Forest responded and was able to keep up their pace. Wake Forest opened the fourth with a 15-point advantage and they didn't slow down. A transition three from Sharp capped off a 6-0 run and triggered a quick timeout by Charlotte. Phillips (game-high 24 points) and Penna exchanged buckets from deep, but impressive ball movement from Wake Forest reigned supreme and allowed the Demon Deacons to roll to a 73-48 victory.
Up next, the Deacs will try to extend their winning streak to three games when they host Maryland Eastern Shore on Saturday (Dec. 8) at the Coliseum. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m.
