LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Wake Forest men's golf team shot a school-record 268 during Friday's first round of the Louisville Cardinal Challenge. The Demon Deacons posted a 16-under total on the par-71 UofL Golf Club and are tied for second after the opening 18 holes.
Duke is the first round leader at 27-under par, followed by Wake Forest and host Louisville tied at 16-under. USF and Western Kentucky are tied for fourth at 7-under par.
The Demon Deacons were led by Marco Steyn, who shot a career-best 7-under 64 to finish T-2nd on the individual leaderboard. Senior Lee Detmer is also in the top 10, shooting a 6-under 65 to finish T-7th.
"It was a great start to the season," said head coach Jerry Haas. "We shot 16-under par and everybody was in it all day long. Marco shot a collegiate best 64 and Lee had a fine 65 to lead our team. Hats off to Duke, who played fantastic today. We are looking forward to playing with them tomorrow. Coach Aaron (O'Callaghan) and I are very pleased with what we saw. There was great effort from all the young Demon Deacons today and the future is very bright."
Eric Bae shot a 2-under 69 in the first round, as did Alex Fitzpatrick, who was playing as an individual. Cameron Young shot a 1-under 70, while Eugenio Chacarra posted a 73 in his first collegiate round.
The single-round 268 broke the previous school record of 269, accomplished three times, most recently at last year's Stitch Intercollegiate. The 16-under par score is the fifth-lowest single round in relation to par, as the four lower scores the Deacs have shot all came on par-72 courses.
The Louisville Cardinal Challenge continues Saturday and concludes Sunday at the UofL Golf Club.
