Strong Second Period Powers Wake Forest Field Hockey Past Richmond

9/23/2018 2:47:00 PM | Field Hockey

RICHMOND, VA. – Four Deacons scored in the second half to lift Wake Forest (5-4) over Richmond (3-7) 4-0 on a rainy Sunday afternoon. Wake Forest has now won its last four matches.

The Deacons defense came out strong with its first shutout of the season. Wake Forest took 16 shots and put 10 on goal while holding the Spiders to seven shots and four on target. Keeper Isla Bint earned her fifth win of the season with four saves to hold the Spiders off.

After a scoreless first period, the Deacons came out firing in the second half. Sophomore Anne van Hoof put the Deacons on the board with her fifth goal of the season off the penalty corner. Senior Veerle Bos inbounded the ball while Megan Anderson fed van Hoof for the missile from the left side.

Just minutes later, freshman Laia Vancelles extended the Deacons' lead as she rebounded Alexis Grippo's shot to get past the Richmond keeper giving Wake Forest a 2-0 lead.

After a standout performance on Friday night with a hat trick, Jule Grashoff struck again in the 58th-minute against the Spiders with a goal following a penalty corner with Grippo and Anderson on the assists. Grashoff paced the Deacon offense with five shots and three shots on goal. She also leads the team with seven goals on the season.

Elisha Evans shut the door on the huge offensive performance with her second goal of the year in the 64th minute. She found the back of the net on the rebound from a save from the Richmond keeper as the Deacons took the final 4-0 lead.

Wake Forest returns home to host ACC foe Duke at Kentner Stadium on Friday, Sept. 28 at 5 p.m.
