WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.- No. 4 Duke (8-3, 2-1 ACC) snapped No. 21 Wake Forest field hockey's (5-5, 1-2 ACC) four-game win streak as the Blue Devils narrowly defeated the Deacons, 3-2 under the lights at Kentner Stadium on Friday.
Wake Forest got off to a hot start, scoring the first goal of the match in just the second minute as Anne van Hoof found the back of the net for the sixth time this season off a penalty corner with assists from Emily Adamson and Alexis Grippo.
Duke answered back with two goals in the first period to take a 2-1 lead into the break. The first goal was scored at the 11-minute mark as Margaux Paolino got past Wake keeper Isla Bint to even the score 1-1. The Blue Devils took the lead as Rose Tynan scored her eighth goal of the season in a one-timer off a fast break at the 32-minute mark.
Senior Emily Adamson netted her second goal of the season just two minutes into the second frame for the Deacs, as NCAA assists per game leader Megan Anderson found Adamson on a cross to score the equalizer.
Duke was awarded a penalty stroke midway through the second period, that resulted in the game-winning goal for the Blue Devils with keeper Cat O'Conner in the net for the Deacons. Bint re-entered the game and made five stops in the second half of play, but the Duke defense held the Deacons off for the remainder of the match.
Van Hoof led the Wake Forest offense with three shots, all on goal, while Jule Grashoff, Emily Adamson and Abby Carpenter all added one shot.
The Deacons return to action on Sunday, Sept. 30, as they travel to face No. 20 Liberty for a non-conference meeting. The match is set for 1 p.m., and will be broadcasted on ESPN+.
