WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The Wake Forest men's and women's track and field programs opened the 2019 indoor season with four event victories at the sixth-annual Dick Taylor Carolina Cup in Chapel Hill. The Demon Deacons won three events on the track and one in the field. Along with Wake Forest, three other North Carolina schools (UNC, Duke and East Carolina) invaded the Eddie Smith Fieldhouse for competition. The Deacs' men and women both finished in third place, scoring 24 and 35 points, respectively. .
On the Track, Wake Forest set the tone early. The men's 400m distance medley relay team consisting of Dakota Greenwalt, Evan Simmons, Sebastian Fischbach and Michael Moerk took the event title with a time of 10:22.89.
"Any time you come out at this time of year and your team is mentally tough, you have a chance to compete well," said head coach John Hayes. "We have a lot of things to work on, but I'm pleased with the effort today."
Senior Alva Hicks edged the competition in the field, winning the shot put event with a personal best of 14.9m (46-6.75). Hicks almost made it 2-for-2, with a second-place finish in the weighted-throw event with a mark of 19.9m. Fifth-year student-athlete Johanna Schulz kept the momentum for the Deacs with a victory in the women's 800m (2:14.10). Also in the shot put, Janese Lynch finished third with a mark of 13.28m (43-7.00) and Alexandria Florent finished second in the women's high jump with a mark of 1.65m.
"The good thing about Alva and her performances is, we knew she was capable of that today," Hayes expressed. There was no surprise. She's done an exceptional job preparing and I think this is the start of a tremendous senior year for her."
The Demon Deacons saw strong performances from some newcomers as well. 17 freshman made their track & field debuts for the Deacs, including Amy Harding-Delooze. Harding-Delooze separated from the competition, winning the women's mile race (5:01.99) in her first collegiate meet appearance. Hannah Brookover (second place) and Elise Wright (third place) helped the Deacs sweep the top three spots in the women's mile. Lily Harding-Delooze performed well in her debut with a second-place finish in the 800m (2:16.49).
On the men's side, 2018 ACC Cross Country Freshman of the Year, Zach Facioni, battled Duke's Matt Wisner down the final stretch, earning a second-place finish in the mile race for Wake Forest. Freshman Anthony Jones came away with a third-place finish in the high jump, while freshman Ethan Roach finished second in the 60m dash with a personal best time of 6.96.
Up next, the Demon Deacons will host the Wake Forest invite on January 19-20 for the 2019 home opener. Competition will take place at JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, N.C.
