The Demon Deacons will look to defend their title after defeating Memphis 4-1
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The top-ranked Wake Forest men's tennis team defeated Memphis, 4-1, in the championship match of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend event at the Wake Forest Indoor Tennis Center Saturday (Jan. 26) evening.
With the win, the Demon Deacs (5-0) have secured a spot at the ITA National Team Indoor Championship, held February 15-18 in Chicago. The Deacs will be one of 15 winners from this weekend's ITA Kick-Off events to head to Chicago and will join the University of Illinois who received an automatic berth into the event as the tournament host.
Wake Forest will look to defend its title at the event after defeating UCLA 4-2 in the championship match a year ago in Seattle.
The Deacs jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after taking the doubles point from Memphis (5-1). The freshmen duo of Siddhant Banthia and Melios Efstathiou quickly took Court 3, 6-1, before Alan Gadjiev and Julian Zlobinsky won on Court 2, 6-4. Bar Botzer and Petros Chrysochos were up 5-4 and had match point on Court 1 when play was suspended.
Wake Forest's lead quickly ballooned to 3-0 behind wins from Chrysochos and Yuval Solomon. Playing No. 1 singles, Chrysochos defeated Chris Patzanovsky, 6-4, 6-2, before Solomon won 7-6(4), 6-1 at the No. 4 position.
The Tigers claimed their lone point at No. 5 singles, where Banthia fell to Memphis' Oscar Cutting. Zlobinsky then clinched the match with a 6-3, 6-4 victory at the No. 6 spot. All remaining matches were abandoned.
The Deas have a week off before returning to action on Sunday, February 3, taking on Oklahoma State at home. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
