
Women’s Tennis Completes ITA Carolina Regional

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Wake Forest women's tennis team hosted the ITA Carolina Regionals over the weekend, welcoming 130 players from 23 teams. Carolyn Campana made a strong run in the main singles draw, advancing to the semifinals, while Anna Campana won the consolation draw. In doubles, MC Meredith and Eliza Omirou also advanced to the semifinals.
Play started on Thursday with qualifying singles rounds and round of 64 and round of 32 in doubles. All five doubles teams were in action for the Deacs. Lexi Franco and Peyton Pesavento picked up two wins on Friday, defeating an Appalachian State duo 8-5, before downing a Davidson pair 8-1 in the round of 32.
Meredith and Omirou earned a first-round bye and delivered an 8-6 win in the round of 32 over a duo from East Carolina. The Wake duo advanced to the quarterfinals with an 8-5 victory over Maryann Rompf and Georgie Walker of Furman. Fourth-seeded Omirou and Meredith earned a huge 8-5 win over the fifth-seeded duo to seal their spot in the semifinals. Top-seeded Anna Rogers and Alana Smith from NC State narrowly defeated the Wake pair 7-6 (6), 6-7 (5), 15/13 in a gritty battle for a spot in the finals.
Chandler Carter and C. Campana earned a first-round bye and then defeated a Clemson couple 8-3, before falling to Alle Sanford and Anika Yarlagadda of UNC 8-5 in the round of 16. Anna Brylin and Saby Nihalani delivered an 8-3 win in the round of 64 before dropping to a Furman squad 8-5. A. Campana and Maddie Lynch paired up but fell to Kacie Harvey and Sophia Patel 8-7 (2).
In singles, nine of Wake's 10 players competed in the main draw and Maddie Lynch played in the B draw. C. Campana had a tremendous weekend, advancing to the semifinals. She cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win in the opening round and followed with a 6-3, 6-1 win in the round of 32. Camapana defeated Duke's Meible Chi 6-4, 7-6 (5) to advance to the quarterfinals, where she upset fourth-seeded Anna Rogers 7-5, 7-6 (5). North Carolina's Cameron Morra, the two-seed, defeated Campana 6-3, 6-4.
Omirou earned a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Frida Cnosses of NC Central in the opening round and followed with a 6-3, 6-3 decision over Furman's Julia Adams. Top-seeded Kelly Chen defeated Omirou 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 in the round of 16.
Pesavento and Franco each won their first-round matches, 6-3, 6-2 and 6-4, 5-7, 7-5, respectively. Meredith also earned a round of 64 win, defeating Jordan Strickland of Western Carolina 6-3, 6-1. Carter pulled off a three-set effort in the opening round, defeating 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (5) over Duke's Summer Dvorek. Rounding out the main draw of singles, Saby Nihalani downed Duke's Ema Lazic 6-2, 6-3.
In the singles B draw, freshman Maddie Lynch earned a 6-3, 6-1 win over Wofford's Brittney Wilbur before falling to Davidson's Alyssa Hahn in a three-set effort.
Freshman A. Campana picked up five wins on her way to the consolation singles title. She defeated Mljana Ristic 6-0, 6-4 in the round of 32 and then delivered a 6-2, 6-2 win over Jenna Dean. In the quarterfinals, she faced teammate Brylin, who was forced to retire in the middle of the match. Campana earned a spot in the finals after defeating Rocio Safont 6-1, 6-0. In the finals, she faced Duke's Dvorek, defeating the Blue Devil 6-2, 6-3.
Up next, C. Campana looks to secure a singles bid to the ITA Fall Championship next month, while Meredith and Omirou set their sights on a doubles bid. Draws will be released closer to the event.
