Deacons Complete ITA National Fall Championships

NEWPORT BEACH, CALIF. – Three members of the Wake Forest women's tennis team impressed at the ITA National Fall Championship. Eliza Omirou and MC Meredith made a run in the doubles bracket, advancing to the quarterfinals. Sophomore Carolyn Campana earned a bid in the singles draw, picking up three wins in consolation play.
Meredith and Omirou earned a Round of 32 victory, outlasting Abi Altick and Taylor Johnson from UCLA, 5-7 6-4 14/12 . The Wake pair continued to impress with a 7-6 (5), 6-4 decision over fourth-seeded Tenika McGiffin and Kaitlin Staines of Tennessee to earn a spot in the quarterfinals.
The Deacons' run ended as Cal's Anna Bright and Haley Giavara defeated Omirou and Meredith 6-4, 6-0, just shy of the semifinals.
Campana dropped her opening match in the main draw of singles, 6-3, 6-4, but rallied back to win three straight matches in consolation play. She started with a 6-4 3-6 6-3 victory over Rebeka Mertena of Miami. Campana picked up another three-set effort, downing NC State's Alana Smith 6-3 5-7 6-3 to advance to the quarterfinals. The Hillsborough, Calif. native delivered a 6-3 6-1 win over Yale's Samantha Martinelli to seal her spot in the semifinals. Georgia's Vivian Wolff defeated Campana 6-3, 6-2 in the semis.
Wake women's tennis will return to action in January to begin dual match play.
