TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Wake Forest men's golf team used a strong final round to win the title at the Seminole Intercollegiate. The Demon Deacons shot 7-under during Sunday's third round at Golden Eagle Country Club to move from fourth to first place and capture their second straight victory.
The Demon Deacons ended the tournament at 13-under, one shot ahead of host Florida State at 12-under. Jacksonville and West Virginia tied for third place at 10-under.
The Deacs were led by sophomore Parker Gillam, who finished tied for first at 8-under to capture his first collegiate victory.
"It was very close down the stretch but we played some great golf to finish," said head coach Jerry Haas. "We played the two par-5s, No. 15 and No. 18, very nicely and were 8-under as a team over the last four holes. The wind came up a little bit for the final groups and it was our day for the victory. I am so proud of these guys to win their second straight trophy. It was a great way to start the spring."
Gillam shared the individual crown with Jacksonville's Thomas Thurloway at 8-under. Gillam shot a 3-under 69 during the final round to post his first career win.
The low round of the day for the Deacs belonged to Kengo Aoshima, who rebounded from a tough Saturday showing to shoot a 4-under 68 on Sunday. Lee Detmer also shot under par during the final round, carding a 1-under 71 to finish the tournament at even par.
Eugenio Chacarra shot 73 and Eric Bae shot 74 on Sunday to round out the Demon Deacon lineup.
The victory was the second straight win for the Demon Deacons, who concluded the fall schedule with a victory at the Steelwood Collegiate in October. It is the first consecutive victories for the Deacs since winning the Rod Meyers Invitational and the Shoal Creek Intercollegiate to open the 2017-18 season.
Wake Forest returns to action March 11-12 with the General Hackler Championship in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
