Lanzilli Breaks RBI Record in Series-Clinching Win Over BC

Sophomore Chris Lanzilli hit two homers and totaled 10 RBIs to lead Wake Forest to the 13-3 victory.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Chris Lanzilli set a new program record with 10 RBIs in a game, leading the Deacons to a 13-3 win over Boston College to clinch the series at David F. Couch Ballpark on Sunday afternoon.

A Stoneham, Massachusetts native, Lanzilli hit a grand slam in the bottom of the fourth, an RBI groundout in the fifth, a two-run single to right in the sixth, and a three-run homer to left in the eighth—his third of the weekend—to cement his place in Wake Forest history.

The Demon Deacons (12-9, 3-3 ACC) out-hit the Eagles (10-8, 2-4 ACC) 13-8, following up Saturday's 22-run output in a big way. Scoring 35 runs over a two-game stretch marked Wake Forest's highest run total in back-to-back ACC games since plating 37 in two games against Maryland in 2002.

"Offensively, for Chris Lanzilli to have 10 RBIs, that never happens," head coach Tom Walter said. "That's a great week—that's a great two weeks. I'm just really happy for Chris. I know when we play Boston College, it's extra special to him because of where he's from."

On the mound, Morgan McSweeney, another Massachusetts native, started and conceded three runs on six hits and two walks over 7.0 innings with five strikeouts to earn the win and improve to 3-1. Bobby Hearn and William Fleming followed with scoreless innings in relief.

"It started with Morgan McSweeney, I thought he threw the ball really well," Walter added. "I'm really proud of the way he battled. It didn't go great for him in the first but he settled down and threw a heck of a ballgame."

A sac fly by Boston College opened the scoring in the first inning, and that 1-0 lead held until Lanzilli's grand slam gave the Deacs the lead for good in the fourth.

In the fifth, Patrick Frick hit an RBI single and Lanzilli's RBI groundout made the score 6-1.

A two-run triple from Cody Morissette got the Eagles back in it in the top of the 6th, cutting the score to 6-3, but McSweeney was stout on the mound, recording a strikeout to end the inning and strand Morissette at third.

The batting order perked up in the bottom of the sixth again, starting with a Bruce Steel double down the left field line. Logan Harvey then singled up the middle, bringing in Steel. Michael Turconi singled to right, and Michael Ludowig then hit a sac fly to plate Harvey. That set up another two-run hit as Lanzilli brought in Frick and Turconi on a single to right, making it 10-3.

Frick was walked to start the bottom of the eighth and Ludowig singled, setting up Lanzilli, who homered to left to cap off the scoring.

In addition to Lanzilli's career day, Turconi went 3-for-4 with a double and walk, and Frick batted 2-for-3 with two walks and four runs scored. Ludowig added a 3-for-4 effort.

The loss was the first of Eagle freshman Mason Pelio's career, as he entered with a 2-0 record and 1.45 ERA. He allowed four runs in 4.0 innings.

Wake Forest returns to David F. Couch Ballpark on Tuesday at 6 p.m. to face Charlotte on ACC Network Extra.
