Wake Forest Outlasts Duke in 12 Innings, 5-4

Patrick Frick delivered the game-winning hit in the 12th, while the bullpen combined for 6.2 shutout innings.

DURHAM, N.C. -- Wake Forest outlasted Duke in 12 innings, 5-4, to clinch the series at Durham Bulls Athletic Park on Sunday afternoon.

Four Demon Deacon (15-10, 5-4 ACC) relievers combined to toss 6.2 shutout innings as Wake Forest edged the Blue Devils (13-11, 3-6 ACC) in the nearly five-hour game.

Ryan Cusick tossed the 11th and 12th innings to earn the victory, striking out two without allowing a hit.William Fleming threw 2.1 innings, while Antonio Menendez pitched 2.0 frames. Bobby Hearn also recorded an out in the sixth.

Patrick Frick capped off an impressive weekend by delivering what proved to be the game-winning hit in the 12th inning, when he hit a line-drive single to score Logan Harvey.

With a 3-for-5 effort on Sunday, Frick finished the weekend 7-for-13 with a homer, double, two walks and four RBIs.

Jake Mueller went 3-for-6, while Michael Turconi entered in the ninth inning and went 2-for-2.

The Deacs jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third inning. Chris Lanzilli hit a sac fly, Bobby Seymour tallied an RBI single and Brendan Tinsman hit an RBI groundout to put Wake Forest on the board.

Duke scored twice in the fourth on an RBI groundout and a passed ball, but Tinsman delivered a solo home run in the fifth to make the score 4-2.

The Blue Devils added single runs in the fifth and sixth to tie the game, taking advantage of leadoff walks to even the score at 4-4. Morgan McSweeney finished with 5.1 innings pitched, allowing four runs (three earned) on three hits and four walks.

Duke reliever Eli Herrick entered in the fifth and kept the Deacs off the board for 3.0 innings, striking out seven. Thomas Girard entered in the eighth and held Wake Forest scoreless until the 12th, taking the loss to fall to 0-3.

Wake Forest continues its road swing at UNCG on Tuesday at 6 p.m. on ACC Network Extra.
