The Demon Deacons scored four runs over the eighth and ninth innings but fell to the Spartans, 9-5.
GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Wake Forest scored four runs over the eighth and ninth innings and brought the potential tying run to the plate, but the rally fell short in a 9-5 loss to UNCG at the UNCG Baseball Stadium on Tuesday night.
The Demon Deacons (15-11) struggled in the middle innings as the Spartans (16-7) scored eight-consecutive runs to take an 8-1 lead through seven innings.
After going 0-for-13 with runners on base the first seven innings, Shane Muntz flipped that script with a three-run blast in the top of the eighth which cut the deficit to 8-4.
The Spartans scored one in the bottom of the inning to make it 9-4. In the ninth inning, Michael Turconi walked, Chris Lanzilli singled, Bobby Seymour walked and Shane Muntz hit an RBI single to bring the potential tying run to the plate, but a hard ground ball was hit right at a UNCG defender to end the game.
Muntz and Patrick Frick had two hits apiece to lead the Deacon offense.
A pair of UNCG errors in the first inning helped the Deacs score a run to take a 1-0 lead. Wake Forest starter Ryan Cusick held the Spartans scoreless through three innings before a two-out rally by UNCG in the fourth brought home four runs and knocked Cusick out of the game.
Bobby Hearn was the lone Wake Forest reliever not to concede a run, striking out two in 1.1 scoreless frames.
UNCG reliever Austin Parsley tossed 3.0 scoreless innings, striking out four to earn the victory. David Flores went 2-for-3 with a double, triple and three RBIs, while Caleb Webster was 4-for-5 to aid the Spartans in their winning effort.
The Deacs continue their eight-game road swing this weekend, traveling to No. 10 Louisville for a three-game set on ACC Network Extra.
