The Panthers jumped out to a 7-0 lead en route to an 8-3 victory over Wake Forest.
PITTSBURGH -- Pitt scored in four of the first five innings, jumping out to a 7-0 lead en route to an 8-3 victory over Wake Forest at Cost Field on Friday night.
Because of inclement weather in the forecast for Sunday, Wake Forest (19-16, 7-9 ACC) and Pitt (10-22, 3-13 ACC) will now play a Saturday doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
The Demon Deacons were led by Patrick Frick, who went 3-for-4 with an RBI, and Chris Lanzilli, who was 2-for-3 with a walk.
Wake Forest started slow against the Panthers' starting pitcher, Derek West. He didn't allow a run his first five innings before conceding one in the sixth and two in the seventh. In his 6.0+ innings of work, he struck out 12 Deacons while giving up seven hits and one walk.
All four of Pitt's extra-base hits came in the first three innings and drove in runs. Kyle Hess hit an RBI double in the first inning, Connor Perry homered in the second, and Ron Washington Jr. and Nico Popa hit RBI doubles in the third to make the score 4-0.
Small ball helped the Panthers add three fifth-inning runs, tallying two singles, two walks, a hit-by-pitch, a fielder's choice and a squeeze bunt to push their lead to 7-0.
After that, the Wake Forest bullpen kept the Deacs in the game as Bobby Hearn threw a scoreless inning and Shane Muntz retired all six batters he faced.
The Deacs hit four-straight singles with one out in the sixth, including an RBI from Bobby Seymour, to plate their first run of the game. Pitt got out of the inning with a strikeout and groundout as Wake Forest left the bases loaded.
Wake Forest once again rallied in the seventh. The Deacs plated two runs on RBIs from Michael Turconi and Frick, then with the bases loaded and one out again, lined into an inning-ending double play.
Pitt closer Chase Smith entered with a four-run lead and didn't allow a baserunner over 2.0 frames, striking out one Deacon.
