Wake Forest Sweeps Doubleheader Over Pitt

4/13/2019 10:07:00 PM | Baseball

The Demon Deacons claimed wins by scores of 20-8 and 7-6 to clinch the series.

PITTSBURGH -- Wake Forest swept a doubleheader from Pitt by scores of 20-8 and 7-6 to clinch the series at Cost Field on Saturday.

The Demon Deacons (21-16, 9-9 ACC) totaled 28 hits over the doubleheader, including four home runs and five doubles, taking the series from the Panthers (10-24, 3-15 ACC).

"Any time in this league you can win a series on the road, it's hard-fought and well-earned," head coach Tom Walter said. "I'm really proud of our guys. Yesterday was a disappointing day for us but I think the guys bounced back today and we did just enough."

Wake Forest is back at home Tuesday, playing host to Liberty at 6 p.m. on ACC Network Extra.

Game 1: Wake Forest 20, Pitt 8

Michael Ludowig and Bobby Seymour carried the load in the opening victory. Ludowig finished the day 4-for-4 with two doubles, a home run, walk, five runs scored, three RBIs and a stolen base. Seymour went 4-for-5 with a grand slam and seven RBIs.

Shane Muntz went 2-for-4 with two walks and four RBIs while Chris Lanzilli and Brendan Tinsman also added two hits apiece. Chase Mascolo added his first-career home run late in the game, as well.

The game swung back-and-forth early on, with Pitt taking a 3-0 lead in the second inning. Trailing 4-2 in the third,, Antonio Menendez entered with two on and one out and coaxed an inning-ending double play, going on to earn the win after the Deacs took the lead for good in the fourth.

Wake Forest plated four two-out runs behind singles from Michael Turconi, Seymour and Muntz, to pull ahead, 6-4.

Pitt answered with a run to make the score 6-5, but Ludowig blasted a two-run homer in the fifth to push the margin back to 8-5.

The Panthers once again closed the gap with two runs in the bottom of the fifth, cutting the margin to 8-7. That's where it stood until the seventh when Wake Forest broke open for five runs, then added six more in the eighth, including Seymour's grand slam.

Jared Shuster kept the Deacs ahead in the middle innings, striking out seven while allowing three runs over 4.0 frames. Tyler Witt conceded a run on two hits with two strikeouts over the final 2.0 innings to seal the win.

Sky Duff was 4-for-4 with a walk and three RBIs to lead Pitt.

Game 2: Wake Forest 7, Pitt 6

Wake Forest scored six runs in the second and held onto that lead for the rest of the game.

Patrick Frick led the Deacs with a 3-for-5 effort, adding a homer and double. On the mound, Ryan Cusick settled in after a rocky second inning to pitch 5.0 innings, allowing four runs and striking out four, to earn the win and improve to 5-2.

Bobby Hearn tossed a scoreless seventh inning, while William Fleming shut the Panthers out in the eighth and ninth innings to convert his fifth save.

DJ Poteet, Logan Harvey, Michael Turconi, Patrick Frick and Bobby Seymour all recorded RBIs in the six-run second inning as the Deacs jumped out to a 6-0 lead.

Pitt's David Yanni hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the inning to cut that margin in half. After an RBI double made the score 6-4, Frick's fourth-inning homer was the final run the Deacs would score, pushing the lead to 7-4.

Bryce O'Farrell recorded a two-run double to make Pitt's deficit 7-6 in the sixth inning, but Antonio Menendez recorded his third strikeout of the inning to strand O'Farrell at second.

After Hearn tossed a 1-2-3 inning in the seventh, the Panthers again created opportunities in the eighth and ninth innings.

A two-out single in the eighth was negated by a fielder's choice. In the ninth, Ron Washington Jr. hit a one-out single, but Kyle Hess and Nico Papa both flew out to the track to end the game.

After Wake Forest's quick start, William Kirwan took the mound for Pitt and kept the Deacs off the board the final 4.0 innings, allowing just one hit and no walks with two strikeouts.
