Chris Lanzilli hit two home runs and Tyler Witt tossed 3.0 hitless innings to lead the Deacs.

SHELBY, N.C. -- Chris Lanzilli hit two home runs and Tyler Witt tossed 3.0 hitless innings in relief as Wake Forest defeated Gardner-Webb, 9-7, at Keeter Stadium on Tuesday night.

The Demon Deacons (27-19) hosted the Runnin' Bulldogs (19-22) in the annual Jim Horn Memorial Game, honoring Jim Horn, who was a member of Wake Forest's 1955 College World Series championship team and was influential in bringing the American Legion World Series to Shelby.

Lanzilli hit his first home run in the first to put the Deacs ahead, 2-0.

Gardner-Webb scored five of its seven runs in the second inning on four hits, a walk and two errors.

The Deacs tied it up at 5-5 in the third inning. Lanzilli hit another two-run homer, this time to straightaway center, then Shane Muntz followed with a solo blast.

A two-run homer by JP McGuire put Gardner-Webb up 7-5 in the top of the fifth, but Wake Forest battled right back in the bottom of the inning on RBI doubles by Bobby Seymour and Michael Ludowig.

Wake Forest pulled ahead for good on RBIs from Lanzilli and Seymour in the sixth. Meanwhile, Witt was dominant on the mound to earn the win and improve to 3-1, striking out five and conceding no hits and one walk as he tossed the sixth, seventh and eighth innings.

William Fleming entered in the ninth and threw all seven pitches for strikes, including a double-play ball and a flyout to end the game to pick up his seventh save.

Jake Mueller reached base five times with a double, single and two walks, scoring three runs. Muntz reached base in all four of his plate appearances with a homer, single and two walks.

Wake Forest travels to High Point on Wednesday at 6 p.m. on ESPN+ before having this weekend off for final exams.
