AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Wake Forest men's golf team had a record-setting opening day of the Augusta Haskins Award Invitational on Saturday at Forest Hills Golf Club. The Demon Deacons shot 29-under over the first two rounds and hold the tournament's 36-hole lead.
The No. 3 Demon Deacons are two shots ahead of No. 7 Texas, who is at 27-under. Arkansas is in third place at 19-under and South Carolina is fourth at 18-under.
Wake Forest shot a 19-under first round 269, tying the lowest 18-hole score in program history in relation to par. The Deacs followed it with a 10-under second round 279 and are 10 shots off the school 54-hole record as they enter the final round.
"We got off to a great start and made a lot of birdies," said head coach Jerry Haas. "We know that it will likely take a school-record score to win this event as Texas has been right with us the whole time. It should be another great round tomorrow."
Cameron Young led the Demon Deacons on the opening day with a pair of impressive rounds. He shot a 9-under 63 in the first round to break the tournament single-round record and tie the Wake Forest 18-hole record in relation to par. The previous tournament record was an 8-under 64 set eight times before, including by Demon Deacon Bill Haas in 2001. He becomes the fourth Wake Forest golfer to shoot a 9-under round, joining Chris Kite (1986 Schenkel), Todd Lynch (1996 Red River Classic) and Webb Simpson (2007 Western Refining College All-American). Young followed his historic morning round with a second round 65 and at 16-under holds the individual 36-hole lead by six strokes.
Eugenio Chacarra is T-7th at 5-under after 36 holes after posting rounds of 68 and 71. Alex Fitzpatrick and Lee Detmer are both at 3-under following the second round, while Eric Bae is a 1-over.
Wake Forest's first round 19-under performance tied the school-record 19-under final round at last year's Stitch Intercollegiate.
The final round of the Augusta Haskins Award Invitational will take place on Sunday at Forest Hills Golf Club.
