Wake Forest's bullpen threw 5.2 shutout innings to seal the victory over Florida State.
DURHAM, N.C. -- Wake Forest received 5.2 shutout innings from its bullpen in a 7-4 victory over Florida State in pool play of the ACC Championship at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park on Tuesday evening.
The Demon Deacons (31-25) will now play No. 13 NC State on Thursday night with a trip to the ACC Championship Semifinal on the line. That game is set for 7 p.m. on RSN.
The relieving combination of Antonio Menendez, Carter Bach, Tyler Witt and William Fleming stymied the Seminoles (35-21), striking out six while conceding just two hits and two walks without allowing a run.
"The story today was obviously that our bullpen was fantastic. They just got big outs all the way up and down," head coach Tom Walter said. "We're excited about the next matchup [against NC State on Thursday]. Obviously they're playing really well right now. They had a big weekend last weekend, and they've got a lot on the line, too."
Offensively, Jake Mueller, Chris Lanzilli, Bobby Seymour and Logan Harvey all had multi-hit efforts. Mueller, Shane Muntz and Bruce Steel all drew multiple walks as Wake Forest racked up nine in the game.
Five of those came in the seventh inning when the Deacs broke a 4-4 tie with three runs. Steel and Mueller drew bases-loaded walks, while another run scored on a passed ball.
Wake Forest jumped out to an early lead thanks to a two-run triple by Brendan Tinsman and RBI single by Harvey in the second inning.
Muntz added an RBI double in the third to push the lead to 4-0, but the Seminoles tied it with a two-run triple by J.C. Flowers and two-run homer by Nander De Sedas in the fourth.
That chased Wake Forest starter Colin Peluse from the game despite him matching his career high with seven strikeouts.
Menendez got out of that inning and finished with 2.1 innings pitched and three strikeouts.
Bach recorded the final out of the sixth and earned the win to improve to 1-0. Then Witt entered and struck out three over 2.1 innings, before Fleming entered and notched the final two outs of the game.
For Florida State, starter Drew Parrish struck out 13 over 5.2 innings, allowing four runs (one earned) on eight hits and a walk. Flowers and De Sedas combined for four of FSU's six hits.
