Four Deacs Compete at Southern Intercollegiate Championships

ATHENS, GA. – Four members of the men's tennis team spent the weekend in Athens competing at the Southern Intercollegiate Championship hosted by the University of Georgia. Bar Botzer, Yuval Solomon Rrezart Cungu and Eduardo Nava represented the Deacs.
Student-athletes from 12 schools competed in the 64-player singles field and a 32-team doubles tournament. The event was broken into four 16-player compass draws for singles and two 16-team compass draws for doubles.
In doubles, Botzer and Nava partnered up in the red draw. The duo got off to a strong start, defeating a pair from UCF, 6-2 but fell 6-4 to fourth-ranked Johannes Ingildsen and Brian Berdusco of Florida before moving to the consolation draw.
Cungu and Solomon competed in the black draw, narrowly dropping their first match 7-6(4), but bounced back in the backdraw to defeat Clemson's Teodor Giusca and Matteo Vialmin, 7-5.
Botzer earned a first-round bye in singles play. He advanced to defeat Florida's Blaise Bicknell 6-2, 6-4, before falling to No. 52 Duarte Vale, 6-2, 6-4, who went on to win the black draw singles title.
Cungu and Nava each picked up first round victories with Cungu defeating No. 61 Luis Erlenbusch of Tulane 6-4, 6-4. Nava earned a hard-fought three set victory after dropping the first frame, 6-7 (1), 6-4, 7-6(4). Both players fell in the quarterfinals of their respective draws.
Wake Forest returns to action at the ITA Men's All-American Championships, Oct. 5-13 in Tulsa, Okla.
