Bresky Reaches 200th Win; Deacs Sweep Season Openers

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Head Coach Tony Bresky earned his 200^th career victory at Wake Forest as the Demon Deacons swept the season openers against Coastal Carolina and Tennessee Tech.

Wake 7, CCU 0
Wake Forest (2-0) only needed one doubles win to clinch the opening point of the season as Coastal forfeited the third doubles match. Freshman Henri Squire partnered with veteran Eduardo Nava to clinch the doubles point with a 6-2 decision on the top court.

In singles, another Coastal (0-1) forfeit handed the Deacs a 2-0 advantage. Rrezart Cungu cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 victory on court five helping Wake to a 3-0 lead.

Squire had an impressive debut clinching the match with a 6-1, 6-1 victory in the second spot. Wins continued to roll in for Wake Forest as 67th-ranked Siddhant Banthia defeated Daiki Tanabe 6-0, 6-2. No. 43 Bar Botzer handed the Deacs a 6-0 lead after defeating Zac Talik 6-3, 6-0.

Nava sealed the sweep with a two-set victory, picking up a 7-6(4) first set win and a 6-0 second set victory.

Wake 7, TTU 0
All three doubles matches ended within seconds of each other and were all 6-3 victories for Wake Forest as the Deacs took the point.

Botzer and Banthia opened scoring in the second match of the day, defeating Carlos Vicente and Evzen Holis on court three, followed by Squire and Nava in the top spot. Melios Efstafathiou and Morgan Dill were also credited with the 6-3 win.

Efstathiou played in his first singles match of the season, putting the first singles point on the board with a 6-3, 6-0 decision on court two. Banthia boosted Wake to a 3-0 lead with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Lucca Silva followed by Nava who clinched the match with a 6-1, 6-1 win in the fourth spot.

Wake played out the two remaining matches highlighted by a three-set 6-1, 6-7(5), 15-13 rally from Botzer on court one to finish off the sweep. Cungu also earned a victory on court five, defeating Riku Kubota 6-4, 6-3.

Wake Forest will host ITA Kickoff Weekend on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 24 & 25 at the Wake Forest Tennis Center. The Deacs will welcome ETSU, Kentucky and Penn State. The winner of the four-team tournament will advance to the ITA National Indoor Championships.
