No. 24 Wake Forest Sweeps Brown in Doubleheader

2/29/2020 8:31:00 PM | Baseball

Adam Cecere hit three home runs in the two games, while the Deacs also received impressive starts from William Fleming and Jared Shuster.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- No. 24 Wake Forest put together a solid all-around effort en route to a doubleheader sweep over Brown at David F. Couch Ballpark on Saturday.

Tom Walter recorded his 300th win as Wake Forest head coach in the opener, then the Demon Deacons (6-5) tallied their first shutout since 2018 in the nightcap over the Bears (1-6). He's just the second coach in program history to eclipse the 300-win mark.

Adam Cecere had a huge day at the plate, going 4-for-7 with three home runs and six RBIs over the doubleheader.

"He's shown that in the scrimmage work before the season started. The last two weeks of scrimmage work he was really good and showed good power," Walter said. "He's just a worker. The kid's been grinding and waiting for his chance. He got it today and he capitalized."

On the mound, starters Jared Shuster and William Fleming combined to allow only five hits in 15.0 innings while striking out 19 and walking three.

"Jared and Will were outstanding today, and we needed that," Walter said. "On a weekend where we're short in the bullpen, we needed to get 15 innings out of two starters which is what we did. That gives us a chance to line up our pitching for tomorrow."

The Deacs will close out the weekend on Sunday at 2 p.m. against Sacred Heart on ACCNX.

Game 1: Wake Forest 7, Brown 4

Cecere started the day in a big way, breaking a 2-2 tie with a two-run blast in the sixth inning which put the Deacs ahead for good.

Shane Muntz added an RBI double in the seventh which made the score 5-2, right before the Bears scored a pair of runs in the top of the eighth which cut the margin to 5-4.

The Deacs got those runs right back on a Chris Lanzilli sacrifice fly and Michael Ludowig bases loaded walk. Eric Adler entered in the ninth and struck out the only batter he faced on three pitches to earn his first-career save.

In his start, Shuster allowed two runs on three hits — all in the fourth inning — over 7.0 innings. He struck out 10 batters and conceded just one walk.

Offensively, Cecere, Lanzilli, Muntz, Michael Turconi and Derek Crum all had two hits apiece. Muntz was also hit by a pitch and drew a walk, reaching base four total times.

Game 2: Wake Forest 10, Brown 0

Fleming put together a gem in the nightcap, recording career-highs in strikeouts (nine) and innings pitched (8.0). He allowed just two hits — none after the second inning — and two walks as he earned the win to improve to 2-1.

Cecere roped two more home runs and Lanzilli added another to pace the offensive effort. Lanzilli led the way with three hits, while Cecere, Michael Turconi, Brendan Tinsman, Bobby Seymour and Derek Crum tallied two apiece.

Wake scored a run in each of the first three innings, put up a four-spot in the fifth, two in the sixth and another in the eighth to cap off a 10-run night with 15 hits.

Brennen Oxford retired the side in order in the ninth to close the game out.
