Wake Forest Falls to Syracuse on the Road

Syracuse, N.Y. – The Wake Forest volleyball team fell to the Syracuse Orange, 3-1, on Friday night in New York.
 
The Deacs were led by Kamryn Malloy's 13 kills and Ashley Slater's 12, brought together with Andrea Fuentes' 30 assists. Kalani Whillock and Olivia Franke held down the Deacs defensively, with Whillock's 13 digs and 24 receptions and Franke's five blocks. Franke also chipped in six kills while fellow middle blocker Delaney McSweeney had eight kills and three blocks.
 
How It Happened
Sets one and three proved the most competitive with 10 and 12 tie scores throughout each set. The Orange came out on top in the first, winning 25-19. Wake Forest stayed with Syracuse offensively throughout the set, with each team recording 11 kills. One of the deciding factors in the match was Syracuse's four service aces. The second set was also accompanied by equal offense from each team as the Deacs and Orange each recorded 13 kills in the set. The Orange had two service aces to Wake Forest's zero, but the Deacs had three blocks to Syracuse's two. Syracuse won the second set 25-22.
 
The Deacs came out on top in the third set, winning 26-24. They recorded one service ace to Syracuse's two but had seven blocks over the Orange's three. Wake Forest only had 11 kills to Syracuse's 15, but the Deacs had zero service errors over Syracuse's three. Syracuse took the fourth set, 25-18, to win the match 3-1.
 
Coach's Comments
"We had more service errors than normal and more attack errors than normal, and that needs to be cleaned up for our match Sunday. Our best performance came in the third set, and we knew we could win against them, but we just didn't execute as well as we needed to. We have some time to clean a couple things up before Sunday and that's what we're going to do." – head coach Randi Smart
