Demon Deacons Fall to NC State in Raleigh

RALEIGH, N.C. – The Wake Forest volleyball team fell, 3-0, to the NC State Wolfpack on Sunday afternoon.
The Deacs were led by six kills from Kamryn Malloy and 13 assists from Andrea Fuentes. Kalani Whillock led the defense with 37 receptions and nine digs. Olivia Franke had the largest presence on the net with six blocks.
How It Happened
Wake Forest started off on a high note with a 4-1 lead in the first set. The set remained point-for-point until the Wolfpack was able to pull away with a 15-11 lead at the media timeout. NC State maintained the lead, but the Deacs were able to cut into the deficit with three points in a row at 17-22 and forced an NC State timeout. Three more points for the Deacs got them within three at 20-23, but the Wolfpack sealed the set win, 25-20.
NC State jumped to a 4-0 lead to start the second set. Wake Forest called a timeout when the Wolfpack took the 16-6 lead. Out of the break the Deacs cut the deficit to eight at 19-11 and forced an NC State timeout. The Wolfpack came out of the break and swiftly took the set 25-15. The third set had a similar tune, with the Wolfpack going up early, 6-0. Kills from Chloe Wilson and Kamryn Malloy ended the drought for the Deacs at 7-2. With NC State up 21-8, the Deacs called a timeout but couldn't find an answer for the Wolfpack and NC State took the set 25-9 to win the match 3-0.

"I'm disappointed. We did not execute and played some really poor defense. We did not play to our potential and that is always hard, for coaches and players. We'll get back in the gym and work on some things this week and get ready to go at home on Friday." – head coach Randi Smart

Wake Forest will return home to Varsity Arena inside Reynolds Gymnasium for four matches over the next two weeks. The Deacs will be back in action Friday, October 15 when they host the Notre Dame Irish. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
