No. 17 Demon Deacons Fall in Friday Contest At VCU

10/22/2021 5:31:00 PM | Field Hockey

Nat Friedman and Maggie Dickman found the back of the net in the non-conference clash.

RICHMOND, Va. -  The No. 17 Wake Forest field hockey team fell by a score of 3-2 on Friday afternoon against VCU at Cary Street Field in Richmond, Va.

The Demon Deacons (6-8, 1-4 ACC) trailed the Rams (9-5,4-2 A10) by two goals through 18 minutes of game action. Undaunted, the Deacs mounted a comeback as Nat Friedman and Maggie Dickman netted unanswered goals to lock the teams at two heading into the final period of play.

After Wake Forest's defense held the Rams shotless in the third period, VCU clinched the non-conference contest with a goal three minutes into the final frame of the match.

For Friedman, Friday's score marked her second of the season and the 10th of her collegiate career. Dickman's game-tying goal was her fourth of the season, setting a new career high. Additionally, Laia Vancells was credited with her first assist of the season on Dickman's third-period score.

Sophomore goalie Tori Glaister started in her 19th-consecutive game in goal for the Deacs, tallying four saves in the first half. The sophomore has now made a career-high 44 saves in the 2021 campaign.

Overall, Glaister has made at least three saves in 10 of Wake Forest's 14 matches this season.

How It Happened

  • Both teams opened the match battling for possession and positioning as neither squad attempted a shot over the first 11 minutes and 25 seconds of the match. VCU threatened first, firing off a pair of shots as Tori Glaister tallied her first save of the match. The other VCU attempt went wide.

  • With less than a minute left in the first period, Glaister made her second save of the afternoon, denying VCU's first penalty corner of the match.

  • Moments later, the Rams took control of a 1-0 lead after finding the back of the net off their second corner opportunity.

  • Grace Delmotte took the Demon Deacons' first penalty corner just 43 seconds into the second stanza, but the Deacs were unable to capitalize.

  • Wake Forest and the Demon Deacon defense stood tough again with 12 minutes left in the half as Glaister denied another VCU corner opportunity for her third save.

  • VCU extended their lead to 2-0 at the 19-minute mark as the Rams capitalized on their fourth corner of the match.

  • The Deacs denied a pair of opportunities 25 minutes into the match as Wake Forest blocked a shot before Glaister grabbed her fourth save of the first half.

  • Nat Friedman got the Deacs on the board (2-1) as she dribbled around the VCU defense and fired a shot into the back of the net with three minutes left in the first half.

    • This marked Friedman's second goal of the 2021 season.

  • The Demon Deacons came out of the halftime break aggressive as Friedman and Grace Sambrook fired shots in the opening 90 seconds of the third period, but VCU's goalie collected her first saves of the match.

  • Wake Forest threatened at the midway point of the third stanza as the Deacs attempted five shots in a 90-second span. VCU's goalie made four saves as the Deacs were unable to add a game-tying goal.

  • Maggie Dickman flipped the ball past VCU's goalkeeper to tie the match at two heading into the final period of game action.

    • Dickman's goal at the 43-minute mark was the Demon Deacons' 10th shot of the period, while Wake Forest kept the Rams out of the shot column for the entire 15-minute frame.

  • VCU regained the lead (3-2) off a penalty corner with just under 12 minutes remaining in regulation.

  • Wake Forest threatened late as Dickman fired a shot at the 56-minute mark, but VCU's goalie made one last stop to secure a 3-2 victory.
