CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Wake Forest volleyball team swept the Virginia Cavaliers, 3-0, Sunday afternoon in Charlottesville.

The Deacs were led by Kamryn Malloy's match-high 17 kills and .457 hitting percentage. Olivia Franke finished with eight kills and zero errors for a team-high hitting percentage of .571. Andrea Fuentes orchestrated the offense and played a major role in the defense as she recorded a double-double performance with 36 assists and 10 digs. Peyton Suess led the team in the passing game with 11 digs and chipped in seven kills. Delaney McSweeney also added seven kills and led the team on the net with a match-high four blocks.

How It Happened
Wake Forest came out from the jump with momentum, taking a 7-2 lead in the first set to force an early timeout by Virginia. Out of the break, the Cavaliers attempted to close the gap but a block from Malloy and Franke maintained the Wake Forest lead at 10-7. The Deacs maintained a three-point minimum lead for almost the rest of the set, with a kill from Slater getting them to a 20-16 lead. A small run from Virginia gave them their closest chance at the set, forcing a Wake Forest timeout at 22-20. The Deacs came out of the break and scored three in a row off a kill from Malloy, service ace from Kalani Whillock and a kill from McSweeney to seal the set win, 25-20.

The second set saw a similar battle, with a point-for-point battle this time from the Wake Forest side trying to cut the deficit. The Cavaliers jumped out to an early 6-3 lead but a kill from Franke got them within one at 8-7. Back-to-back kills from Malloy started a 4-0 run for the Deacs to take the lead, 11-9 and force a Virginia timeout. Out of the break, Malloy went up for another one to give the Deacs the 12-9 advantage. Virginia was able to tie it up at 13 and a point-for-point battle ensued. After ties at every point, a kill from Malloy put the Deacs up 23-22 and Virginia took their second timeout of the set. Out of the break they were able to tie it again at 23 but a kill from Franke and a block from McSweeney and Fuentes sealed the set win, 25-23.

With the Deacs having the 2-0 advantage, Virginia came out hot to start the third set. The Cavaliers took a strong 6-2 lead before a kill from McSweeney ended their run. Wake Forest trailed 15-11 at the media timeout. Coming out of the break, the Deacs went on a 5-0 run to take the 16-15 lead and forced a Virginia timeout. Out of the break, a kill and service ace from Fuentes and a kill and block from McSweeney helped the Deacs maintain their lead, 22-19, and forced another Virginia timeout. This time out of the break, Virginia gained some momentum and cut the deficit to 23-21 and force a Wake Forest timeout. Kills from Chloe Wilson and Franke sealed the set win, 25-23, for the Deacs' 3-0 sweep of the Cavaliers.

Coach's Comments
"This was a good win for us. I'm proud of our offensive effort today. We executed when Virginia made some pushes and stuck to our game plan. We played our game and won it in three; I'm proud of them for that. We made some mistakes and have some things to clean up before Thursday's match against Tech, but we needed this one and the team went out and got it." – head coach Randi Smart
