Wake Forest Falls in Road Contest at North Carolina

10/8/2021 9:25:00 PM | Women's Volleyball

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Wake Forest volleyball team fell, 3-1, Friday night to the North Carolina Tar Heels.

Led by the offensive efforts of Kamryn Malloy, Ashley Slater and Andrea Fuentes, the Deacs fell short after winning the first set of the match. Malloy had a match-high 20 kills and Slater was also in double-digits with 11. Fuentes continued her consistency with 38 assists. On the net, Olivia Franke led the team in blocking, recording six, and chipped in two kills. Libero Kalani Whillock led the passing game with 16 digs. Malloy was the only other Deac in double digits with 11. Slater and Peyton Suess each recorded two service aces to aid the Deacs' point-scoring.

How It Happened
North Carolina jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the first set, but Wake Forest went on an 8-1 run to take the 8-5 lead and force a Tar Heel timeout. Back-to-back kills from Kamryn Malloy and back-to-back service aces from Ashley Slater gave the Deacs the momentum heading into the break. Carolina was able to cut the deficit to one, 13-12, and force a Wake Forest timeout. Kills from Sweeney and Slater and a service ace from Suess kept the momentum on the Deacs' side coming out of the break to go up 18-15. Two more kills from Malloy and an unsuccessful challenge from North Carolina forced the Tar Heels to take their second and final timeout of the set, trailing 22-17. A service ace from Fuentes and kills from Malloy and Franke sealed the first set victory for the Deacs, 25-18.

North Carolina carried much of the momentum to start the second set, going up 10-5 on the Deacs and forcing a Wake Forest timeout early on. Wake Forest went on a 5-0 run to tie it at 10 and then again at 11 before Carolina was able to capitalize on some errors and pull away. The Deacs were able to stay within two before kills from Malloy, Suess and Slater tied it up at 20 and forced a North Carolina timeout. Out of the timeout, the Tar Heels took the 22-20 advantage to force a Wake Forest timeout. Back-to-back kills from Slater stalled the Carolina set point, 24-22, but the Tar Heels came out on top, 25-22.

The third set had ties at two, seven, eight, 11 and 12 before the Tar Heels were able to pull away and stay ahead by at least one or two for the rest of the set. Kills from Kamryn Malloy and Chloe Wilson put the Deacs within one at 17-18 and 18-19 but Carolina was able to pull away and take the third set 25-18. The fourth set followed a similar path, with the Deacs and Tar Heels going point-for-point until the media timeout when the Tar Heels took the 15-14 lead. They jumped to an 18-14 lead out of the break and forced a Wake Forest timeout. Kills from Malloy and Fuentes cut the deficit to bring the Deacs within one at 19-20 and forced a Carolina timeout. Carolina took the momentum out of the break and finished the set, 25-21, to win the match, 3-1.

Coach's Comments
"I loved our game plan. We executed really well at times, but we have to get better with consistency and being able to finish a set. We had great moments, but we just need to be more consistent and execute when it matters. Our serving has improved and that helped us, but we just have to get better all the way around." – head coach Randi Smart
