Dear Demon Deacon Nation:
The Deacs have landed in Boston and are ready to take on the Eagles tomorrow at Noon on ESPN2 with the opportunity to clinch the ACC Atlantic Division Title and advance to next week's ACC Championship Game in Charlotte. And, just a few minutes ago Coach Dave Clawson met with our team so they could be the first to learn the wonderful news that he has just signed a long-term contract extension furthering our mutual commitment for him to continue to lead the Demon Deacon football program for many, many years to come!
Since his arrival in Winston-Salem eight years ago, Coach Clawson and his staff have built Wake Forest football into a consistent winner and championship contender. Our student-athletes have graduated at record rates while experiencing six-straight bowl trips and some of the most exciting home football environments in our history. You can read about Coach Clawson's thoughts on how he and his family love Winston-Salem, Wake Forest and the bright future that is ahead for our football program in our press release.
I am deeply grateful for the vision and commitment of President Susan R. Wente and our University leadership in continuing to invest in the growth of Wake Forest Athletics and our core goals, including providing Value to the University, Winston-Salem and the Community.
The support and engagement of all Deacon Nation has helped make this historic announcement possible today, and your ongoing support and presence is critical. When the McCreary Football Complex is completed, Wake Forest will have invested $100 million in football facilities over the past seven years. Led by the tremendous philanthropy of Bob McCreary and the entire Deacon Nation, we have demonstrated to the ACC and entire country that Wake Forest is committed to competing at the highest level on and off the field of competition. With the Sutton Sports Performance Center, McCreary Football Field House, Doc Martin Practice Fields and the previous incredible renovations at Truist Field that include the Bob McCreary Video Board Honoring the Class of 1961 and McCreary Tower, together we have steadily assembled the infrastructure for sustainable success.
Coach Clawson and our football program have rallied our entire community together for memorable moments like the incredible atmosphere and once-in-a-lifetime experience that our big win over Big Four rival NC State brought us in front of a sold-out passionate and electric Truist Field crowd. The home field advantage enroute to our 6-0 home record in 2021 is a credit to the Spirit of the Old Gold and Black, our spirit squads, operations staff, gameday workers and the entire Winston-Salem and Triad community who brought energy to Truist Field each game!
From Wake Forest being the first Division I school in the South to integrate its football team in 1964; to our first football Atlantic Coast Conference Championship in 1970; to the Tangerine Bowl in 1979; to the 2006 ACC Championship and Orange Bowl trip; to Ron Wellman and President Emeritus Hatch's decision to hire Coach Clawson on Dec. 10, 2013, to our current program record streak of six-straight bowl games; we have experienced many thrilling moments of success in our football history. We will continue to build on our Big Four best record of 32-21 against UNC, NC State and Duke this century as well as our 46-21 mark against all in-state opponents during the past 21 years. We will continue to elevate the national narrative of Demon Deacon football and achieve more memorable moments for our student-athletes and entire University community.
Throughout Wake Forest Athletics, it has been a great fall and while our men's soccer team has advanced to their seventh-straight Sweet Sixteen and will play Notre Dame on Sunday, we are also proud of our best women's soccer, cross country and volleyball seasons in recent memory. Additionally, our basketball programs are a combined 11-0 with the men taking on Oregon State at 9:30 p.m. tonight and women's basketball is at home tomorrow at 4 p.m. against UMBC in the Joel.
Indeed, my Thanksgiving Day was full of gratitude and Mary Lawrence and I hope you were able to enjoy yours with family and friends. Join me in thanking Coach Clawson, his wife Catherine and their children, Courtney and Eric for their unwavering commitment as Demon Deacons!
Go Deacs!
