WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Wake Forest men's basketball team officially kicks off the 2021-22 season against William & Mary on Wednesday, Nov. 10 at 7 p.m. in Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
The Demon Deacons are coming off an 88-56 exhibition victory over Winston-Salem State last Friday in which some new faces made a tremendous impact.
Junior Jake LaRavia and graduates Alondes Williams and Khadim Sy combined for 44 points, 19 rebounds, nine assists, seven blocks, and five steals. The trio combined to shoot 15-of-27 (55.6%) from the field and 12-of-13 (92.3%) from the free throw line.
William & Mary is coming off a 7-10 finish to the 2020-21 season and are led by third-year head coach Dane Fischer. The Tribe return four starters from last years' team.
Second-year head coach Steve Forbes is set to lead an exciting team that features eight newcomers, with Isaiah Mucius, Daivien Williamson, Carter Whitt, and Tariq Ingraham returning from last season.
Of the eight newcomers, four are transfers: Sy (Ole Miss), graduate center Dallas Walton (Colorado), Williams (Oklahoma), and LaRavia (Indiana State).
The other four newcomers are freshmen: guard Robert McCray (Columbia S.C.), guard Lucas Taylor (Wake Forest, N.C.), guard Cameron Hildreth (Worthing, England), and center Matthew Marsh (Reading, England).
Wake Forest ranks third in the ACC in average height (6'6 and 5/6), with six players measuring 6'8 or taller for the first time since 2008-09: Mucius (6'8), LaRavia (6'8), Ingraham (6'9), Sy (6'10), Walton (7'0), and Marsh (7'1).
The Demon Deacons also boast five seniors and graduates – three of which (Sy, Walton, and Williams) bring NCAA Tournament experience to the table. The last Wake Forest team to feature five scholarship seniors and graduates was Skip Prosser's debut 2001-02 squad.
Tipoff in the Joel is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. and the game will stream live on ACC Network Extra.
Fans can follow along via the Demon Deacons Twitter, Instagram and Facebook accounts (@WakeMBB).
Mucius and Williamson on Record Watch
Isaiah Mucius and Daivien Williamson each have the opportunity to etch themselves into the Wake Forest record book this year after producing strong junior seasons.
With 371 career rebounds, Mucius is only 129 rebounds away from becoming the 37th player to amass 500 rebounds for the Deacs. Additionally, Mucius is 352 points away from becoming the 55th Demon Deacon to join the 1000-point club.
The veteran will need to average just over 11 points and four rebounds during the regular season to reach those milestones.
After building strength and improving his game over the offseason, Williamson is poised to establish himself as one of the most accomplished transfers in Wake Forest history.
The Winston-Salem native's 12.9 points per game last season constitutes the third-best mark among all players to have transferred into Wake Forest in the modern era, behind only David Carlyle (13.6 ppg in 1987-88) and Anthony Tucker (13.0 ppg in 1989-90). Williamson's 283 points in 22 games last season ranks ninth on the all-time transfer leaderboard.
