Strong First Period Powers Wake Forest Field Hockey Past Duke

Four Demon Deacons scored goals, while Tori Glaister shined in net for Wake Forest.
DURHAM, N.C. - Two Deacons scored in the first half and second half to power Wake Forest (5-9, 2-1) past Duke (3-7, 1-1) on Friday afternoon, 4-1.
The No. 13 ranked Demon Deacons made the most of their chances in the match as Duke outshot (13-12) Wake Forest, but the Deacs notched nine of those attempts on goal. Rookie keeper Tori Glaister earned her second win of the season with five saves and Wake Forest's defense held Duke scoreless for the first 52-plus minutes of the match.
The Deacons came out firing in the first period as sophomore Nat Friedman put Wake Forest in front with her fifth goal of the season. Just minutes later, junior Olivia Corthals scored the first goal of her career off a deflected shot from Friedman on a penalty corner opportunity.
Sophomore Meike Lanckohr scored the Deacs' third goal of the match and her fourth of the season in the third period on another penalty corner. The score off an assist by freshman Grace Delmotte.
After Duke got on the board with less than eight minutes remaining to cut the lead to 3-1, freshman Hannah Maxwell quickly answered with her third goal of the season, and the final score of the match, off an assist by Lanckohr with three-plus minutes remaining in the match.
How It Happened

The Demon Deacons applied early pressure on Duke, recording three shots and two goals in the first period.

The first score came from Nat Friedman after she dribbled into the circle and shot the ball into the left side of the cage.

Wake Forest's second goal came off a deflection by Olivia Corthals from a Friedman shot on another penalty corner opportunity.

Duke answered Wake Forest's intensity in the second period recording three shots, with two on goal, but rookie Tori Glaister recorded a pair of saves and the Deacons defense held strong.

The game entered intermission with Wake Forest holding the 2-0 advantage.

The Demon Deacons recorded the first three shots of the third period, finally scoring on the third when Meike Lanckohr scored off a pass from Grace Delmotte on a penalty corner.

Duke totaled three shots during the third stanza but was held scoreless once again.

The Blue Devils record five shots to begin the fourth period, scoring its lone goal of the match on that fifth attempt. Lily Posternak scored following a Glaister save on a penalty corner.

Undaunted, Wake Forest scored on its next opportunity, which came off a penalty corner that came with less than four minutes remaining in the match. Hannah Maxwell scored off a deflection.

Duke tallied one more shot, while Wake Forest recorded three others prior to the match ending with the Deacons winning, 4-1.
In The Spotlight
Junior Olivia Corthals, who has been an anchor for the Wake Forest defense for the past three seasons, scored her first-career goal in the first period on Friday. The score helped the Demon Deacons secure an early advantage that proved to be too much for Duke to overcome.

Wake Forest returns to Kentner Stadium the following week for their final home game of the spring slate as the Deacs host Virginia at 12:00 p.m.
The Deacs will conclude the spring season with a pair of road games at Syracuse (April 2) and Louisville (April 17).
