Maxwell’s Golden Goal Lifts Wake Forest Past Virginia in Overtime

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Freshman forward Hannah Maxwell netted the biggest goal of her young career, lifting the Wake Forest field hockey team to a 3-2 overtime victory against Virginia on Saturday afternoon at Kentner Stadium.

After Virginia (5-10, 0-3 ACC) opened the scoring late in the first quarter, Wake Forest (6-9, 3-1 ACC) recorded a pair of goals in the second period to take the lead.

Freshman Grace Delmotte scored the first goal for the Demon Deacons, and her fifth of the season, off an assist from junior Laia Vancells.

Remaining on the attack, Wake Forest scored its second goal five minutes later when junior Abby Carpenter recorded her first goal of the season on a penalty corner opportunity. Sophomore Meike Lanckohr notched the assist on the play.

The second half was a defensive battle and the Cavaliers were the first to break through with less than two minutes remaining in the match to even the score at two goals apiece.

Undaunted, Wake Forest came out aggressive in the overtime period and scored on its fourth attempt to win the match. UVA did not record a shot in the extra period.

Saturday marked the Demon Deacons spring home finale and Wake Forest will be back in action on Friday at Syracuse.

How It Happened

Wake Forest controlled much of the early possession in the first quarter, but it was Virginia who ended up with the opening scoring chances in the game.
- After the first shot came at the 11:00 minute mark, the Cavaliers earned the first penalty corner of the match nearly three minutes later.
  - Virginia converted the chance as Ezechiels deflected it in front to give the Cavaliers a 1-0 lead at the 14:17 mark of the first.
After the Cavaliers took a goal lead into the second quarter, the Demon Deacons took control of the match. Wake Forest knotted it up at 1-1 just moments into the second quarter.
- Laia Vancells raced down the left flank before working her way into the scoring area. Vancells worked the ball across to Grace Delmotte who was open in front of the net. She converted the opportunity to tie the game at the 17:22 mark.
The Deacs remained on the front foot, continuing to attack the Cavalier defense.
- Five minutes after the first goal, the Demon Deacons earned themselves a penalty corner.
  - Abby Carpenter found the back of the net for the first time this season off an assist from Meike Lanckohr. The goal at the 22:40 mark of the match put the Deacs in front at 2-1.
Moments later, Wake Forest nearly went up two goals when Hannah Maxwell earned a penalty shot.
- Her attempt went wide as the score remained 2-1.
- The Demon Deacons held the one-goal advantage into intermission.
Through three periods, Wake Forest still held the 2-1 lead with a sizable advantage in penalty corner opportunities.
- The Deacs had six chances to the Cavaliers one.
In the fourth, the Demon Deacons fended off two consecutive penalty corners to keep the lead, but the Cavalier attack persisted through the final period of the match.
- Virginia finally broke through with 1:11 left in regulation when Janssen scored off a pass from McDonough to tie the game and eventually send it to overtime.
In the overtime frame, both teams had chances early on including a Wake Forest penalty corner that was saved by the Virginia defense.
Less than a minute later and nearly three minutes into the overtime period, Hannah Maxwell raced down the left sideline and found her way into the scoring area. She went through the defenders legs and fired the game winning shot past the Cavalier goalie.
- It marked her fifth goal of the season and the second game winner for the Demon Deacons.
  - The freshman from Forty Fort, Penn. is now second on the team with five goals to her name this season.

In The Spotlight
Just three minutes into the overtime period, freshman forward Hannah Maxwell scored her biggest goal in her young collegiate career, netting the game-winning goal to give the Demon Deacons their third conference victory of the season.

This marks the second game winner this season for the freshman and the fifth goal overall this season. She ranks second on the team in goals behind Grace Delmotte who netted her sixth goal of the season Saturday's victory.

"We played extremely hard every quarter, but I am disappointed with how we finished in the final third in the second half. When you are scored on in the last minute of the game to send it to overtime, you could have been completely gutted. To show the grittiness of finishing in overtime and most importantly, to kill those 35 seconds off the clock when we had the penalty was unbelievably significant to gain some momentum back. We were playing 6-on-7 in overtime and once we got through that 35 seconds we could attack and be the aggressor, which is what we like to do in overtime. We knew that this game was going to be extremely significant for our growth and development. It's nice to be on the winning side of overtime. We will take a look at the film and complement where we continue to make strides and growth and be critical of the areas where we were exposed and look to mend those ahead of our next match."

The Deacs take the road for their final two ACC games of the season. Wake Forest first travels north to take on Syracuse on April 2, before traveling to Louisville two weeks later on April 17.

The start of the Syracuse match is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
