Maggie Dickman scored the game’s opening goal in her homecoming match of the spring
LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- No. 9 Wake Forest took an early 1-0 lead into halftime, but a late flurry of goals from No. 4 Louisville proved too much to overcome, as the Deacs fell 4-1 on Saturday at Trager Stadium in the 2021 regular season finale.
Wake Forest (6-10, 3-2 ACC) struck first with a goal from sophomore Maggie Dickman in the second quarter, when the Louisville native directed a rebound off a save from the Louisville keeper off of the keeper's pad and into the cage to give the Deacs a 1-0 lead that would hold until the third quarter.
Louisville (13-5, 3-3 ACC) would equalize in the after halftime by converting a penalty stroke. Tori Glaister provided a lot of pressure in the cage for the Deacs, saving three shots on goal in the game, but the Cardinals used three fourth quarter goals to pull ahead and ice the game.
How It Happened
Maggie Dickman scored her first goal of the season in the second quarter, directing her shot from the right corner off of the pads of Louisville keeper Sam Minrath for the Deacs only goal of the game. It was the Louisville native's second goal of her career and came on just her fifth shot of the season.
Quotable - Head Coach Jennifer Averill
"We are all obviously disappointed in our performance in the third and fourth quarter. Our ability to control the tempo of the game hurt us. Today's game is a lesson in growth and humility."
Up Next
With the results of Saturday's games, Wake Forest is in the running to secure second place in the ACC's spring standings. If Wake Forest takes hold of second place, the Deacs will travel to Chapel Hill, N.C. on Friday to take on North Carolina for the conference's auto-bid to the NCAA Tournament. Time for the game is TBA.
