Wake Forest travels to North Carolina for ACC Automatic Qualifier Game

4/22/2021 3:00:00 PM | Field Hockey

Deacs seek first automatic bid to NCAA Tournament since 2014.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - No. 11 Wake Forest travels to No. 1 North Carolina on Friday for the ACC's Automatic Qualifier Game at Karen Shelton Stadium at 1 p.m.

Wake Forest clinched their spot in the Automatic Qualifier game by virtue of securing second place in the spring standings in the ACC, finishing 3-2 in conference play and holding the tiebreaker over fellow 3-2 conference record-holder Boston College, thanks to the Deacs' 3-0 victory over the Eagles in Wake Forest's first game of the spring.

North Carolina earned the right to host Friday's game after winning the 2020 ACC Tournament title this past fall, the Tar Heels' fourth straight ACC tournament title.

The winner of Friday's game will earn the ACC's automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament and will be broadcasted on the ACC Network.

Stay tuned to the Demon Deacons social media accounts (@WakeHockey) for all in-game updates and information.

NCAA Tournament Format
This year's NCAA Division I Field Hockey Championships will feature a 12-team field (instead of the usual 16 teams), consisting of 10 automatic qualifiers and two at-large selections. However, because the Ivy League elected to not play field hockey in the spring, one of the 10 automatic qualifying spots has been shifted to an at-large bid.

The complete bracket will be released at 10 p.m. ET on Saturday, April 24, on ncaa.com.

ACC Automatic Qualifier History
Wake Forest will be going for their first automatic bid to the NCAA tournament since 2014, when the Deacs defeated Syracuse 2-0 in the 2014 ACC Tournament title game. This is Wake Forest's first automatic bid game since 2018, when Wake Forest lost to North Carolina 7-2 in the 2018 ACC Tournament title game.

Four Deacs Secure All-ACC Honors
Four Demon Deacons were selected to the 2020-21 All-Atlantic Coast Conference Field Hockey First and Second Team, as voted on by the league's head coaches.

Meike Lanckohr led the way with First Team honors, while Laia Vancells, Nat Friedman and Grace Delmotte all earned spots on the Second Team.

The recognition marked the first All-ACC accolades for the quartet.

2021 Spring Review
The Deacs finished the spring portion of the 2020-21 season with a 3-2 record, good for second place in the ACC.

Wake Forest started the conference campaign with a 3-0 shutout victory over Boston College at Kentner Stadium on March 6. A fast start propelled the Deacs as the team found the back of the net in the first quarter with a goal by Nat Friedman. Hannah Maxwell added to the Wake Forest advantage with a pair of second half scores, the first goals of her career. Maxwell became the first Demon Deacon to record a pair of scores in a game since Grace Delmotte on Nov. 1, 2020.

Additionally, Eleanor Winants posted a hat trick, assisting on the trio of goals to record a new career high. Tori Glastier was tough in the cage, earning her first-career victory after tallying a career-best six saves.

Next, the Deacs welcomed the Tar Heels to Kentner for their second game of the spring, falling 2-0. Wake Forest responded by rattling off two-straight wins against Duke and Virginia.

Their 4-1 victory at Duke on March 19 came after a pair of goals in the first and second half as Friedman, Olivia Corthals, Meike Lanckohr and Maxwell all found the back of the net in the win.

Maxwell was the hero in the 3-2 win over Virginia as the rookie netted the golden goal in overtime, the Deacs' fourth attempt of the extra period.

After a cancellation due to weather in Syracuse, Wake Forest finished off the regular season at Louisville, dropping the finale by a final score of 4-1.

Maxwell earned a pair of All-ACC Offensive Player of the Week honors for her contributions in the shutout victory over Boston College and her game-winning goal versus Virginia. Additionally, Glastier was recognized as ACC Defensive Player of the Week on March 23 for her instrumental role in the 4-1 victory over Duke, saving a career-high tying six shots and helping the Deacs hold the Blue Devils scoreless for 52-plus minutes of game action.

Last Time Out
Wake Forest took an early 1-0 lead on the road against Louisville, but a late second-half flurry of Cardinal goals was too much to overcome as the Deacs fell 4-1 at Trager Stadium in the 2021 spring regular season finale.

Louisville native Maggie Dickman was the lone goal-scorer for the Deacs, recording her first goal of the season off the pads of the Cardinals' keeper from a tight angle on the right side of the goal. Tori Glaister had three saves on the afternoon.

2020-21 Series History and Scouting the Tar Heels
Wake Forest will be taking on North Carolina for the fourth time this season on Friday. The Tar Heels have taken all three games against the Demon Deacons, winning 3-1 and 5-0 in the fall, and taking the team's spring game 2-0 on March 13 at Kentner Stadium.

North Carolina is led by reigning National Player of the Year Erin Matson, who leads the team in goals with 24 and assists with eight across 16 starts this season. The junior forward has four times the amount of goals of her next closest teammate (Paityn Werth, six goals). Sophomore defenders Madison Orobono and Romea Riccardo share second place in assists with seven apiece.

Senior Amanda Hendry starts in the cage for the Tar Heels, sporting a 1.35 GAA and a .773 save percentage. The Wilton, Conn. native has four shutouts this season.
