No. 13 Virginia Tech Takes Game Two Against Wake Forest

4/10/2021 5:06:00 PM | Baseball

Brendan Tinsman hit his first home run of the season on Saturday afternoon.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Wake Forest pulled out to an early one-run lead, but could not hold on, as a seven-run top of the fifth powered No. 13 Virginia Tech past Wake Forest 16-4 on Saturday at David F. Couch Ballpark.

Wake Forest (10-14, 5-11 ACC) struck first on an RBI-double from Brock Wilken in the bottom half of the first inning, which scored a sprinting Michael Turconi from first base. The Hokies (18-9, 13-7 ACC) would strike back to tie in the top of the fourth, and burst the game open in the top of fifth, with three home runs across those two frames to give them a 8-1 lead.

The Deacs added a trio of runs in the seventh after Brendan Tinsman smacked his first home run of the season to plate himself and Adam Cecere. Lucas Costello would drive in Pierce Bennett three batters later to score the Deacs' fourth run.

On the mound, Reese Robinson tossed a perfect ninth frame to give Wake Forest a chance heading into their final three outs.

How It Happened
  • William Fleming pitched a perfect opening frame on the mound, including a pair of strikeouts.
  • Brock Wilken drove in Wake Forest's first run of the game (1-0) with a double to deep center, scoring Michael Turconi (walk) from first base. Chris Lanzilli also walked with two outs, but nothing was doing as the Hokies struck out a Demon Deacon for the final out of the first.
  • The Deacs kept Virginia Tech off the scoreboard after the Hokies reached on an error and a double. After Fleming struck out his third batter of the game, the Deacs ended the inning by a play at the plate as Brendan Tinsman tossed the ball at the backstop back to Fleming, who applied the tag before the runner crossed home.
  • Wake Forest was retired in order in the bottom of the second.
  • Fleming continued to work quickly, sitting down Virginia Tech in order with a line out, ground out and a fly out in the top of the third.
  • The Hokies tied the game at 1 following a solo home run to begin the fourth frame.
  • Wake Forest got a baserunner in the fourth as Adam Cecere walked with two outs. Virginia Tech induced a ground out to the pitcher to keep the teams locked at 1.
  • The Hokies took over the lead (8-1) with a seven-run fifth inning behind six hits, including two home runs.
  • Virginia Tech increased their lead to 12-1 following three hits, two of which were home runs, in the top half of the sixth
    • Cole McNamee took over the pitching duties for Fleming. The reliever recorded the final two outs of the frame with strikeouts.
  • Crawford Wade entered in the top of the seventh, pitching a scoreless frame. The freshman forced a pop up to his first batter, struck out a Hokie for the second out and induced a ground out to James Broderick at shortstop to end the inning.
  • Wake Forest added three runs in the bottom half of the inning, making it a 12-4 contest. Brendan Tinsman knocked out his first home run of the season, scoring Adam Cecere (walk). Lucas Costello recorded a RBI single to plate Pierce Bennett, who doubled to left center.
  • Virginia Tech added a grand slam in the eighth inning, increasing their advantage to 16-4.
  • Chris Lanzilli walked in the bottom of the eighth with two outs, but the Hokies ended the inning with a fly out to the next Demon Deacon batter.
  • Reese Robinson tossed a perfect ninth inning with a couple of fly outs and a line out.
  • The Deacs went down in order to confirm the loss, 16-4.
In the Spotlight
The freshmen duo of Lucas Costello and Brock Wilken each extended their hitting streaks on Saturday.

Wilken's first inning RBI-double extended his streak to nine games, while Costello's RBI-single in the seventh inning stretched his hitting streak to a team-best 11 games.

Words from Walter
"Not a good performance in any facet, really. It's one of those things when you have a game tomorrow and you get down six or seven runs in our league, it's hard to justify throwing your better bullpen guys when you need them tomorrow. We need to play better, I wish I had answers. But we'll come out tomorrow and we need a good start out of Rhett (Lowder)."

On Deck
Wake Forest and Virginia Tech hit the diamond in the series finale on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. live on ACC Network Extra.

Following the ACC series, Wake Forest hits the road for the first game of an eight-game road trip, traveling to Boone, N.C. on Tuesday, April 13, to take on Appalachian State.
