Bobby Seymour hit two home runs in the game for the third time in his career.
Wake Forest (10-15, 5-12 ACC) scored on five home runs off the bats of four Demon Deacons, with Bobby Seymour leading the way with two round-trippers of his own. Lucas Costello started the game with a lead-off bomb in the first inning, while Shane Muntz added a solo-shot in the fourth inning. Brock Wilken's two-run blast pulled the Deacs within one run in the ninth, but the late heroics were not quite enough to give Wake Forest the edge.
The Hokies (19-9, 14-7 ACC) used three-run fourth and fifth innings to build their lead, but were kept scoreless in the final three frames by the bullpen trio of Hunter Furtado, Camden Minacci and Eric Adler. The three freshmen held Virginia Tech to just one hit across those three innings, keeping the Deacs within striking distance as the game entered its final stretch.
Every hitter in the Demon Deacon lineup posted at least one hit during Sunday's contest, with the freshmen duo of Lucas Costello and Brock Wilken extending their hitting streaks to 12 and 10 games, respectively.
In addition to Wake Forest's five home runs, Cole McNamee and Michael Turconi recorded RBI singles.
How It Happened
- Virginia Tech got out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. After Rhett Lowder struck out the opening batter of the game, a Hokie homered to right center field for the game's first run. The following batter doubled to right field, and advanced to third on a throwing error on the play. A ground out to Lowder pushed across the second run of the game, unearned.
- Lucas Costello started off offensive production for the Deacs with a lead off solo shot, the fourth homer of his freshman season. Wake Forest was retired in order to end the inning.
- Lowder tossed a perfect second inning, capped off by his second strike out of the game.
- The Deacs tied the ball game at 2-2 in the second inning, highlighted by an RBI-single from Cole McNamee with two outs that plated Chris Lanzilli.
- Lanzilli (walk) and Shane Muntz (single) reached base to open the inning. Lanzilli advanced to third base following a double play.
- Pierce Bennett also reached base as the second baseman was hit by a pitch.
- Both teams went down in order in the third inning.
- Lowder tossed his third and fourth strikeout of the game in the top half of the frame.
- A three-run home run gave the Hokies a 5-2 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth.
- With one out, Virginia Tech rattled off a double and single prior to the home run.
- Muntz answered with a home run of his own, cutting into Virginia Tech's lead (5-3) with a solo shot with one out.
- Brendan Tinsman singled immediately after Muntz's homer. Two-consecutive Wake Forest batters were set down to end the inning and keep the score 5-3.
- The Hokies extended their lead to 8-3 with a three-run fifth inning behind a two-RBI single and a sac fly.
- Wake Forest responded with a two-out rally in the bottom half of the inning. A two-run home run by Bobby Seymour chipped into the Hokies' lead (8-5).
- Wilken scored on the Seymour homer after doubling to left field to begin the rally.
- Lanzilli followed Seymour's home run with a single. Muntz walked to push Lanzilli to second, but the Hokies ended the inning with a lineout to third base.
- A two-run home run with one out increased Virginia Tech's lead to 10-5 in the sixth.
- Michael Turconi plated Pierce Bennett in the bottom of the inning to get one of the runs back and make it a 10-6 ballgame.
- Bennett doubled to right center with one out.
- After the first out of the seventh inning, Camden Minacci took the mound for Wake Forest. The freshman ended the inning after retiring two straight batters, including a strikeout, after allowing a leadoff double.
- Bobby Seymour launched a deep solo shot of the center field wall to make it a three-run ball game.
- His second home run of the day went 490 feet.
- Wake Forest was sat down in order in the eighth as the score remained 10-7, Virginia Tech.
- Eric Adler took over the pitching duties in the ninth, inducing a double play and a ground out to Wilken at third to keep the Hokies off the scoreboard.
- After a lead-off single from Michael Turconi, Brock Wilken connected on a 2-2 pitch for his 10th home run of the season, pulling the Deacs within one at 10-9. The Deacs were then set down in order to end the game.
Sunday marked the third time of Bobby Seymour's career that he has hit two home runs in a game, after his two-run home run in bottom of the fifth and his 490 foot solo-moonshot in the bottom of the seventh. The series finale marked the second time in 2021 Seymour hit two home runs in a game, as he also had two big flies against Florida State on March 28.
With his ninth-inning home run, Brock Wilken joined Brendan Tinsman as the only Demon Deacons in the last decade to hit 10 homers in their inaugural collegiate season.
Words from Walter
"We had it where we wanted it there in the ninth inning with the right guys up. A good pitching matchup, advantage counts. Somebody needs to come through there in that situation and put some pressure on them in the ninth.
"Virginia Tech is a good fastball hitting team, and we gave up probably 90% of our hits on the weekend on fastballs. As we saw from Virginia Tech, the difference in the series was that their pitchers pitched backwards and ours didn't. There's a reason that in Major League Baseball less than 50% of the pitches that are thrown are fastballs. For some teams, less than 40%. If you're going to try to pitch in college baseball and be throwing a lot of 2-0, 1-0 fastballs, it's going to be really hard for you. But Virginia Tech was able to pitch backwards and we weren't. Obviously (Cam) Minacci and (Eric) Adler gave us eight outs at the end there with a chance to win the game."
On DeckFollowing the ACC series, Wake Forest hits the road for the first game of an eight-game road trip, traveling to Boone, N.C. on Tuesday, April 13, to take on Appalachian State.
Wake Forest will then travel to Durham, N.C. for a Big 4 matchup, taking on the Duke Blue Devils in a three-game series.
