Three Deacs finished inside the top 25.
ALPHARETTA, Ga. – The Wake Forest men's golf team ended their run at the 2021 ACC Championships by one stroke to Florida State at the Capital City Club – Crabapple after three rounds of stroke play.
Michael Brennan sank a 30-foot putt on 18 to keep Wake Forest in contention. The Deacs were one stroke back from the Seminoles when the final group teed off the 18th hole. A birdie for Mark Power and a par for Florida State's John Pak would have sent Wake Forest and Florida State to a playoff for the fourth spot. Power and Pak each parred the hole, giving Florida State the one-stroke advantage.
Seniors Eric Bae and Parker Gillam were first on the course this morning. Bae was a consistent presence for the Deacs, shooting a 72 each round. He finished T33 and six over for Wake Forest. Gillam steadily improved each day, with his best scorecard coming in the final round. With six birdies on the round, four of which came on the second nine, Gillam finished with a one-under score of 69 and T15 overall in the field. His T15 finishing spot is a 13-line jump from his T28 position at the end of the second round.
Freshmen BJ Rogillio and Michael Brennan made their ACC Championship debuts this week. Rogillio was thrust into the top spot of the lineup after junior Alex Fitzpatrick had to be subbed out. In his first ACC appearance, Rogillio finished T39. His best scorecard came in the second round where he shot a one-under 69.
Brennan was the number two player for the Deacs heading into the weekend and was the third-highest finisher for Wake Forest in his first ACC appearance. Although his best round came in the first, Brennan held on and remained inside the top 25 for the entire event. He finished stroke play T22 with a final score of three-over 213.
Sophomore Mark Power was the top finisher for Wake Forest after shooting a pair of one-under 69s in his first two rounds. He carded a 71 on his final round to finish the event one-under par and T12 on the leaderboard. After a late bogey on the seventh hole in his first nine of the day, two birdies and two bogeys kept him even on the back nine to finish the day.
Wake Forest now awaits their NCAA Regional destination. Regionals will be May 16-18 at a to be determined site. The men's golf selection show will air Wednesday, May 5 at 2 p.m. on Golf Channel.
Coach's Comments
"What a battle with Florida State and Georgia Tech today. We're going to take this experience and carry it with us to Regionals and Championships. I'm really proud, Coach Aaron is extremely pleased, we hit some really good shots down the stretch on the back nine. This just goes to show the importance of one stroke and the value of keeping your composure. It's heartbreaking for them to not make match play the way they did but they didn't fold, they battled.
The ACC Championship is big, but this is not the biggest stage we'll play on yet. This is not the last you'll see of Wake Forest. Go Deacs!" head coach Jerry Haas
