5/20/2021 8:14:00 PM | Women's Golf
This will be Wake Forest’s fifth Championship appearance in the past six years and 17th appearance in program history.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's golf team begins NCAA Championship play Friday morning.
The Deacs finished in second place behind host school Stanford at Regionals last week and are currently No. 4 in the latest GolfStat rankings. Every team competing in this year's field are all inside the top 30 teams in the country according to GolfStat.
Wake Forest's 17 championship appearances is second most in the Atlantic Coast Conference, behind Duke (31). It is also tied for 14th most in the country.
Wake Forest is one of just three schools in the nation to have both their men's and women's programs qualify for the NCAA Championships during the last two events (Arizona State and Texas). The men's team punched their ticket to NCAA Championships yesterday, coming in third place at the Cle Elum Regional.
In the last NCAA Championship in 2019, the men and women's programs both advanced to match play, with the women finishing runner-up behind Duke. Wake Forest was one of just three schools to have both programs move on to the match play portion of the Championship. The women's team's second place finish in 2019 is a program best.
Live coverage of the Championships will air on Golf Channel for the match play portion of the event. Coverage will begin Tuesday, May 25 at 9:00 a.m. ET for quarterfinals and semifinals. Coverage of Wednesday's Championship match will begin at 4:30 p.m. ET.
Course
The 2021 NCAA Championships will be played at the par-72, 6,429-yard Raptor Course at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona.
The Tom Fazio-designed Raptor course offers thrilling challenges that command players' respect through a high-stakes game of risk and reward. Stretching 7,151 yards from the back tees, the par-72 course unfolds over the gentle hills and across shaded natural arroyos found in this picturesque corner of the Sonoran Desert.
Most of Raptor's fairways are generous, and the greens are large with sweeping undulations. Misses tend to find deep greenside bunkers and grass collection areas, making the scramble to get up and down a true test of the short game.
Raptor is considered to be one of the finest daily fee golf courses in Scottsdale and is listed among the best public golf courses in Arizona by Golfweek and Golf Magazine. Raptor is one of only two Scottsdale golf courses to host a PGA TOUR event – the Frys.com Open 2007-2009. Other tour-sanctioned tournaments include the inaugural Williams World Challenge, Andersen Consulting World Championship of Golf and Waste Management Phoenix Open pro ams.
Format
There will be three rounds of stroke play over three days, May 21-23. The top 15 teams and the top nine individuals of non-advancing teams will advance to the final round of stroke play on May 24.
