Wake Forest Set for NCAA Championships

5/27/2021 8:03:00 PM | Men's Golf

This will be Wake Forest’s second Championship appearance in the past three years and 46th appearance in program history.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest men's golf team begins NCAA Championship play Friday morning. Seven total ACC programs qualified for the NCAA Championships, the most of any conference in the country. No other conference had more than five schools advance to the Championships.

The Deacs finished in third place at Regionals last week and are currently No. 7 in the latest GolfStat rankings. Twenty nine of the 36 teams in the field are in the top 30 according to the latest GolfStat rankings.

Wake Forest's 46 championship appearances is the most in the Atlantic Coast Conference and 11th most in the country.

Wake Forest is one of just three schools in the nation to have both their men's and women's programs qualify for the NCAA Championships during the last two events (Arizona State and Texas). The women's team wrapped play at Championships on Monday in the final stroke play round.

In the last NCAA Championship in 2019, the men and women's programs both advanced to match play, with the men finishing in fifth place in match play. Wake Forest was one of just three schools to have both programs move on to the match play portion of the Championship. The men's fifth place finish was their highest since the match play format was introduced in 2009 and highest since they finished tied for third in 2006 when it was stroke play only.

Live coverage of the Championships will air on Golf Channel for the match play portion of the event. Coverage will begin Tuesday, June 1 at 9:00 a.m. ET for quarterfinals and semifinals. Coverage of Wednesday's Championship match will begin at 4:30 p.m. ET.

Course
The 2021 NCAA Championships will be played at the par-70, 7,289-yard Raptor Course at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona.

The Tom Fazio-designed Raptor course offers thrilling challenges that command players' respect through a high-stakes game of risk and reward. Stretching 7,151 yards from the back tees, the par-72 course unfolds over the gentle hills and across shaded natural arroyos found in this picturesque corner of the Sonoran Desert.

Most of Raptor's fairways are generous, and the greens are large with sweeping undulations. Misses tend to find deep greenside bunkers and grass collection areas, making the scramble to get up and down a true test of the short game.

Raptor is considered to be one of the finest daily fee golf courses in Scottsdale and is listed among the best public golf courses in Arizona by Golfweek and Golf Magazine. Raptor is one of only two Scottsdale golf courses to host a PGA TOUR event – the Frys.com Open 2007-2009. Other tour-sanctioned tournaments include the inaugural Williams World Challenge, Andersen Consulting World Championship of Golf and Waste Management Phoenix Open pro ams.

Format
There will be three rounds of stroke play over three days, May 28-30. The top 15 teams and the top nine individuals of non-advancing teams will advance to the final round of stroke play on May 31. At the conclusion of stroke play, an individual champion will be crowned, and the top eight teams will advance to match play June 1-2 to determine a team champion.
