Deacs Set for Home Opener Against Aggies

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest volleyball team has their home opener on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. in Reynolds Gymnasium against North Carolina A&T.
 
The Demon Deacons are coming off a 3-0 weekend in Boone, North Carolina, where they defeated Bellarmine, Charlotte and Appalachian State. After sweeping the Knights and the 49ers, Wake Forest gave up just one set on the weekend to App State before winning the match, 3-1, to come home undefeated.
 
Senior setter Andrea Fuentes currently leads the Atlantic Coast Conference in assists per set, with 11.52/set through 31 sets. She has tallied a league-high 357 helpers through nine matches. She is also seventh in the league in service aces per set, at 0.45 per set and 14 total. Freshman libero Kalani Whillock is 10th in the ACC in service aces, at 0.42 per set and 13 total. Whillock is second in the league in digs per set, averaging 4.45 through 31 sets. Her 138 total digs are third in the league, behind Virginia Tech's Logan Mosley with a league-high 182 and Boston College's Anna Murphy with 144.
 
The Match
The Deacs will face North Carolina A&T at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Reynolds Gym. The match will stream live on ACC Network Extra.
 
Series History
Wake Forest leads the series 12-2 and is on an eight-match winning streak.
 
Last Meeting
The Demon Deacons defeated the Aggies, 3-0, in a neutral site match on Sept. 20, 2008.

Admission into Reynolds Gym is free for all Wake Forest students and volleyball spectators. In accordance with city and state regulations, masks are required at all times while indoors on the Wake Forest University campus.

After a slow start to the match, the Deacs handled business. The offensive attack was led by Ashley Slater and Kamryn Malloy, who each had 10 kills in the three-set sweep. In addition, Andrea Fuentes tallied 40 assists during the match. Defensively, Olivia Franke led the way with a .667 hitting percentage, tallied nine kills and three blocks.
 
Wake Forest 3, Charlotte 0
During the first set, each side went point for point up to 28 before sophomore Olivia Franke recorded a kill and junior Peyton Suess sealed the Deacs win with a strong block to take the set, 30-28. In the second set, Wake Forest went on a 9-1 run and never trailed again. Delaney McSweeney paced the Wake Forest attack with a team and season-high 14 kills. Suess also had strong contributions on the offensive end as she had 11 kills on the day. Andrea Fuentes paced the Deacs' offense with 39 assists. She has recorded 35 or more assists in eight of nine matches this season. On the defensive side, McSweeney anchored the net with four blocks and Kalani Whillock had 12 digs. The freshman libero has had 10 or more digs in her last four matches.
 
Wake Forest 3, App State 1
Saturday evening marked the first meeting between the Deacons and Mountaineers since 2012. The Deacs jumped out to a 2-0 set lead with a dominant performance offensively before dropping the third set 21-25. Wake Forest rebounded by finishing off the Mountaineers in the fourth set 25-16. Offensively, Kamryn Malloy led the way for the Wake Forest offense. She recorded a match-high 13 kills. Olivia Franke and Delaney McSweeney combined for 13 blocks at the net. Kalani Whillock tallied a match high 16 digs on the defensive end.
