Good Morning Demon Deacon Nation!
ACC Champs! Let's begin our 85th edition of From the Quad by congratulating director of track & field/cross country John Hayes and his men's cross country team for bringing home Wake Forest's 56th ACC Championship last week! Four Demon Deacons (Aaron Las Heras, Luke Tewalt, Thomas Vanoppen, Zach Facioni) earned All-ACC honors as they all finished inside the top eight.
It's really hard to Win Championships so we love to see our student-athletes celebrating the moment! So many people throughout DEACTOWN helped these student-athletes along the road to this title and I trust your smiles were as bright as our runners.
And also making ACC news this week is our three-time national championship head field hockey coach Jen Averill, who was named the conference's coach of the year for the eighth time in her career! Check out this special video of our student-athletes and support staff surprising Coach Averill with this news!
Additionally, Sky Caron, Meike Lanckohr, Grace Delmotte, Nat Friedman and Ellie Todd garnered All-ACC honors for our Demon Deacons who now await their NCAA seeding after climbing to No. 8 in the most recent national poll.
As Opening Night for both Deacon basketball squads is just four nights away and we host an ACC Tournament men's soccer match on Sunday, let's get right to the updates!
Coach Muuss & Men's Soccer Ready for Postseason Action on Sunday at Spry!
Coach Bobby Muuss' men's team will host Virginia Tech to open ACC tournament play in Spry Stadium on Sunday at 2 p.m. on ACC Network. Coming off a thrilling upset of No. 9 Louisville to end the regular season, the Deacs have persevered through injuries and are poised to make an exciting postseason run! You can secure your reserved chairback, general admission or Walt Chyzowych Alumni Hill ticket here. We are grateful to Coach Muuss and other soccer supporters who are generously providing free tickets for the first 1,000 Wake Forest students to claim their ticket on the Screamin' Demon Rewards App.
Volleyball Hosts Duke Sunday Afternoon Too
November is the month when our extremely hard-working operations, fan experience, communications and ACC Network staff clone themselves to produce our overlapping fall and winter sports contests. Admission is free as Coach Randi Smart's volleyball team looks for a Big Four sweep against Duke at 1 p.m. inside Varsity Arena!
Deacs Head Down Tobacco Road to Begin Big Four Title Quest
It is as it should be. Not only does the month of November include games against our three oldest rivals, the 12th member of the Union is making a claim as the best college football state in the country and is the only one in America with three ranked teams. This week's Associated Press Top 25 poll has UNC at No. 17, Wake Forest at No. 20, and NC State at No. 21. Our crack communications staff dug deep to learn that this fall marks the first time since 1994 that three members of the Big Four have been ranked in the AP football poll at the same time. And with Duke just one win away from earning a bowl berth, this could be the first time in history that the Big Four would go four-for-four in gridiron postseason participation.
Saturday's football game in Raleigh between the No. 20 Deacs and No. 21 Wolfpack is the only ranked vs. ranked matchup in the Atlantic Coast Conference this week. The game will mark the 116th meeting between the two squads and these programs have met every season since 1910, making it the longest continuous rivalry in the ACC and the second-longest in the FBS!
I know we'll have a big crowd of Black & Gold clad fans inside Carter-Finley Stadium for tomorrow night's 8 p.m. game on ACC Network. Meanwhile, limited tickets are available for the Deacs-Tar Heels 7:30 p.m. ESPN2 matchup inside Truist Field on Nov. 12, and it's time to get all your Deacon friends to make plans to be in Winston-Salem for a very special senior day on Nov. 19 versus No. 22 Syracuse!
#ProDeacs Make Headlines & Highlight Plays
The experiences our student-athletes have on the field, in the classroom and in the community prepare them for life after Wake Forest.
For example, NCAA record holder and Demon Deacons alum Nick Sciba appeared in his first NFL game this past Sunday and tallied a pair of field goals for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Overall, we had 12 Demon Deacons make opening day NFL rosters and Boogie Basham has made waves for the AFC's No. 1 seed Buffalo Bills with an interception, one sack and a pair of pass breakups! Meanwhile on the hardwood in the NBA, Jake LaRavia is off to a hot start with the Memphis Grizzlies and John Collins is putting up All-Star level numbers on the Atlanta Hawks thus far. Not to be outdone, Chris Paul has the Phoenix Suns off to one of the best starts in the NBA.
Demon Deacons Legend Ricky Proehl Honored in Charlotte in December
Wake Forest football alum and two-time Super Bowl champion, Ricky Proehl, will be honored as Wake Forest's ACC Legend this year at a ceremony on Friday, Dec. 2, in Charlotte. Ricky was a four-year letterwinner with the Demon Deacons from 1986-89 and holds multiple program records including most career receiving yards (2,949) and receiving touchdowns (25). Read more about his storied career and the list of Wake Forest legends he joins for this esteemed honor from the conference.
Opening Night Doubleheader at LJVM Tips Monday at 5 PM for Wake Forest Hoops!
Last Sunday and Tuesday nights were truly special days for all those in the Winston-Salem community as the Rams and Deacs hit the hardwood for preseason exhibition games inside Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum. With the passionate crowds and our student-athletes in attendance supporting their friends, there is a buzz in the air as basketball season officially tips off on Monday!
We are proud of our partnership with Winston-Salem State University as we look for ways to bring our community together. With historic basketball heritage at both institutions, this event brought Value to Wake Forest, Winston-Salem & Triad Communities.
The fun continues on Monday afternoon with both hoops programs hosting a doubleheader inside the Joel beginning at 5 p.m. Tickets are on sale now for each contest! Fans who purchase a ticket to the women's game are invited to stay for the men's contest, but will be asked to move to specific sections.
