Kitchell, Dawson Set School Records in Shot Put on Final Day of ACC Championships
2/26/2022 6:57:00 PM | Track and Field
BLACKSBURG, Va. -- The Demon Deacons left the final day of ACC Championships in historic fashion. Both sophomore Thomas Kitchell and senior Chanel Dawson earned the school record in the men's and women's shot put as they respectively placed second and third in the event. These marks, which were personal bests for both Kitchell and Dawson, earned them First Team All-ACC honors.
Wake Forest shot put has been a clear strength of the program this indoor season and their continued success not only showed up in the biggest moment but also simultaneously left their footprint on track and field seasons to come. Kitchell's record breaking toss snapped a mark that had stood in Wake Forest history for 25 years. Dawson equally crushed the record standing in her way as her toss superseded the previous record by almost half a meter.
VANOPPEN CAPTURES BRONZE & FIRST TEAM ALL-ACC
Shortly after the conclusion of the men's shot put, junior Thomas Vanoppen finished third in the men's one mile final. Vanoppen's finish of 4:06.59 also earned him First Team All-ACC honors.
SWANEPOEL RUNS PERSONAL BEST & SECOND TEAM ALL-ACC
In the men's 800M run Rynard Swanepoel was able to capture a sixth place finish behind his personal best run in the event of 1:49.81 and placing his run as sixth best in school history. The freshman from South Africa's performance also earned him Second Team All-ACC honors.
WEEKEND SUMMARY
By the end of the weekend the Demon Deacons were able to tally:
DIRECTOR OF TRACK & FIELD JOHN HAYES:
"There was no quit out there. There were a few places where we could have been better tactically but I couldn't be more proud of the effort. We plan on going into a block of tough training now to prepare for what I believe will be a tremendous May and June championship season."
